I've been going out after supper driving around this week. Our weather has been great and the combines are rolling non stop. The crops are disappearing FAST. With that said this time of year with the Crops disappearing the critters are on the move. My main purpose has been to do a little scouting for my Grand Daughters upcoming Deer Hunt, and to see if I can locate some Coyotes.

I generally leave the house after supper about 6:30PM. Well tonight I drove down by the Reservation Bridge (11 miles south east of town on the north edge of Lake Traverse). I watched a bean field my grand daughter and I have permission to hunt in for a bit looking for Deer coming out of the hills but didn't see anything. I quickly got bored after sitting there and not seeing anything moving so I decided to move on to the next spot.

I started driving north up the county road towards my sisters house. I had went about 2 1/2 miles and when I came over a little rise in the road there in front of me was a Coyote. Well as soon as the Coyote saw me it took off to the west into a grassy ravine. As the coyote left the road another one ran from the east up over the road and followed the first one.

The first one stopped behind a small russian olive tree so I couldn't see it good enough for a shot but the second one was out in the open. At about 70 yards perfectly facing me that was no contest for the DPMS Panther Bull 20. At the shot that coyote was DRT. To my surprise the first coyote ran over and started sniffing the dead Coyote. This Coyote kept figiting around and wouldn't stand still. Finally it stopped quartering towards me and I put a 55gr. Ballistic Tip right on the shoulder. This one flopped around a bit but soon expired. Neither bullet exited!

I drove back to town got Son in Law, Daughter and the GrandKids and we drove back out there and my daughtr took a couple photos of the Coyotes. She told me she emailed them to me but I haven't received them yet.

I then came home and went to work about 8:00PM. I drove around a little while and about 10PM I drove out north of town towards the town's dump to make sure the gate was locked. I turned around and to my surprise there was a Coyote standing on the road between me and town. I got into shooting position as the Coyote went down through the ditch to the edge of the pasture, but as I was going to shoot the coyote started to take off. I barked with my voice and the coyote stopped and stared right at me. Well at 40 yards that was a chip shot for the 16" Bushmaster M4 ORC. I am about positive this is the Coyote I missed last week with the 10/22 at 50 yards, and the one I have been seeing in town. I shot this one with a 65gr. Sierra Gameking Spitzer Boat Tail. I am going to go out there tomorrow and see what damage the Sierra did.

This was a good day, 3 shots = 3 Coyotes.

To recap the score for this year so far is 3 Coyotes with the 16" Bushmaster M4 ORC and 3 Coyotes with the DPMS Panther Bull 20, 1 Coyote missed with the .308 and 1 Coyote missed with the 10/22. OK so my marksmanship level is 75%. I guess I can live with that for now but it does leave room for improvement.

Man I am on a roll. I don't ever remember getting 3 Coyotes in one day before. Actually with 6 Coyotes already in the bag this may be my best year ever. If I remember right the most I have ever shot in one year was 14 (the first year I bought this 16" M4).

Just in case I have never told you I love shooting Coyotes, I love shooting Coyotes!

A superb day, to be certain. A hearty congratulation to you.

THANKS GUYS. For some reason for the last several years this time of year I have found it much more productive to just cruise the backroads where the combine are rolling than to set up and call for some reason. I guess the Coyotes are just getting pushed around with the harvest. It also helps that the local farmers also give me a call and tell me where they are seeing Coyotes.

Thanks again

Nice shooting! Sounds like the black guns have a grip onto ya! What twist are you shooting the 65gr GK's out of? I have some for my buddies 16" S&W and I am wondering how they will work. Scotty

Both of my AR's are 1 in 9" Twists. The 65's are shooting 1" or slightly less 5 shot groups. My best effort was a single 3 shot group at 100 yards in which all 3 were touching. Unfortunately I have not been able to duplicate it since. I read a post on another forum about a guy with a Savage 1 in 9" Twist shooting 65's with Varget and getting some really good groups. May have to try some Varget next.

Great info on the AR's Larry. I appreciate it. My buddies is a 1-9 twist so maybe the Sierra's will work. Scotty

Have your buddy try 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips with H-4895. I am half way between starting and max per Hodgdon's data on their web site. I load these in Military LC Brass with Remington 7 1/2 Primers. I have shot this load in over a half dozen different AR's and it shoots under an inch for 5 shots in all ofthem. My DPMS Panther Bull 20 will put 5 of em in .544" but I just can't get under the 1/2" mark. BTW this combo does a job on Coyotes as I have taken over 2 dozen now with that load.
