Thats steaks there. Nicely done. Thats not much of a flyer. A small change to the charge might cause a one holer.

Off to an excellent start. You could stop with what you have and be quite comfortable on any hunt. Fine workup.

Looking good. Try seating the bullet deeper in .005" increments, you should be able to walk the "flyer" right into the group.

Man, that is some great shooting, I am with Jim, seating might drop it right on in there. Way to shoot buddy. That's a good 30-06 load. Love them PT's!

Oh, what's your speed on them?

Thanks guys. .005" Is what I was thinking as well. As for speed its sitting right at 2813 avg. Es 16.

For whatever reason I don't hear much about the 30-06 accuracy. Maybe because reloaders tend to look for the new wiz-bang calibers???

But I LOVE the 30-06. Hard hitting, great barrel life, very versatile. Great groups BTW.

The .30-06 can be very accurate. There is a reason it is the most popular cartridge in North America. The old cartridge works. It is pedestrian, common, everybody has one, etc.; but it does work. A person could do a whole lot worse than have a .30-06 Springfield.

I shoot 165 Partitions in my Win Model 70 Sporter which I bought in 1995. The best and most accurate load for me is 57.5 grs of IMR 4350. In any event, whatever powder you use, mine shoots occasion 1/4 inch or less groups at 100 yards.

Ah the old 30 Govt at work again......................... and its great pardner the 165gr Partition , seams like that combo just gets the best of it all right ! I have been a huge fan of those two rolling along on the high side of 2900fps, since the early 1980s and if your having trouble killing game with that outfit it sure as heck isn't the gun or the loads fault. period.
That is proven , known killer.
I made one of the best shots I ever made in my life with that load out of my 06 right after the big Yellowstone fires................ hunting in the Scapegoat Wilderness out of Lincoln, Mt. The outfitter is a dear old friend of mine , Mike Bartlemess with Pine Hills Outfitters, and I was down from Alaska for a bit of Elk hunting, Mike had been chasing around a nice 6pt Bull for a few weeks with his clients and had NOT been able to upset him and the season for him in there was about to end , so we launched togeather and went over into the next drainage and started to hunt where he had seen him last. The elk had move over to the other side of the valley so we then tromped over there but by now it was early afternoon and we had quite a few miles on us on shanks mare to get home . After a while we picked him up as they moved up hill and lay down so we launched on him and in about an hour we had droped down and back up over where they were and got into a nice position to glass them. Of course he couldn't be seen then , so we spent a half hour glassing them. Mike is about as good with a pair of binoculars as anyone you will ever meet, and I had sorta decided that he had moved up into the timber never to be seen again , when Mike says cooly "there he is by jingles" and so he was , ranged at 333 yds laying down with only half of his neck and his head showing thru a hole in a small patch of softwoods that had not burned,he was able to pick up an eye and then an ear, and he says well "here is your chance Early burley" . I had a rock solid rest and all the time in the world, but rubbin 350 for me,thought an easy shot with the 243 and a 16X scope, seams a streach with an 06 and a 2x7 Leupold. And I wont go into all the details, but the bottom line is I fired one shot thru that one foot square hole in those trees tht was about 250yds from us and threaded that little 165gr Nosler into his neck, and ALL the elk got up and ran off............................ except old mister dually................... the old 06 had taken him to the great pastures in the sky without him ever knowing what hit him. It was about 11 pm when we wandered back down into camp that nite and I will probably never forget that evening coming in dog tired and both of us to stubborn to stop but having trouble to just lift your feet. We bumped into the horses all hobbled up about 1/2 mile from camp and when they took off, down the valley back to camp ,one of the guides must have heard the commotion and he walked up the valley to meet us with a couple of cold beers and I can tell you I have never drank one that tasted that good, before of since...................... you just cant beat a good ole 06!

ps , in all fairness I should include the fact that Mike had warned me the day before that a long shot on this animal was a probability and I rezeroed the gun from 200yd zero to a 300 yd zero and that of course had a lot to do with me being able to pull that shot off.................. just for the record. Notice all the burnt trees around us??

Superb account, Earl; beautiful bull. And that's the way it is done; the '06 will deliver when it is called to do so.

Great bull and a fantastic story! Nice job on working up the load on your rifle too Sas847runner. The 30-06 is a great shooting cartridge that most people seem to be able to handle the mild recoil from it also. I sure love mine!!

I worked up a load for a good friend in his Savage 110 Pre-accutrigger 57 H414 and 165BT under an inch at Nosler recommended COAL. For some reason I just hate shooting that rifle to me it kicks like a mule maybe something with stock design and a 14"LOP. Not to bad when we brought the rifle up and I started looking at it and found the bore full of rust. Not to mention he picked it up for $250.

500 yards with a fixed 4x Leupold isn't bad!!

Not bad at all, David.
