Made it down to see my dad and go shooting for a little bit. My son shot his 6mm and put three shots at 100 yards with the E-tips that were almost touching. He then shot the 200 and 300 yards plates like it was nothing. I made sure my wife's 25-06 was dialed in should I end up using it on my Mountain Goat if I don't get the "perfect" load for my son's 300 WSM completed in time. No we did not shoot it, I did not have a chance to load any for it before we headed out. I took my 30-06 to make sure it was where I wanted it, 2 3/4" high at 100, and it never let me down. With just a fixed 4x Leupold on it, it will do what it did on a daily basis if I do my part.

The first two went through the same hole literally, and I could not see through my spotting scope the very slightly enlarged hole at 100 yards. My next one was just a bit below the first two, but I think that's pretty darn good using only a 4x scope. I then made left and up corrections and my next shot was right at 2 3/4" where I wanted it. This was with the 165 gr. AccuBond. I had been using 165 gr. Partitions up till now and only started last year using the Accbonds. I am so lucky with this rifle because with the same exact load, it does the same thing with the Partitions.

Awesome shooting David! That is a 30-06 to hold on too. That baby looks like it is ready to go. Scotty

That's some nice shooting! Mine will do that too only I dont have them loaded to as high of a velocity as you're getting. Mine are between 2825-2875 depending on the day. That's still plenty fast enough for me. But yeah I love seeing this because anytime someone tells me a 30-06 isn't accurate enough for target shooting, sniper applications, and barely enough so for hunting, I gotta admit I get my hackles up. Its a grand old American Cartridge, and the fact that its still in the top 5 most popular cartridges over 100 years later is proof enough of its prowess. Looks like you're good and ready for hunting season!

Thanks guys. That load is 57.4 grs of IMR4350 and Federal 210 primers. That's what I get with the Partitions out of the 26" barrel on the Ruger #1B. I have not clocked the Accbonds yet, but from what I've been seeing, the boattail bullets are a bit slower using the same loads, so they might be just a touch slower. I don't think more than 50 fps or so though. This load does not show any pressure signs and my brass life is excellent.

Your right about the 30-06 FJ. As much as I don't have a need for one I would love to have one just cause. They are really so darned versatile and so easy to load there isn't a thing to not like about them. Maybe my son will decide he wants a 30-06 so I don't have to buy one. I wouldn't mind doing the load work for him! Scotty

David,

Very nice group. I'd say that load is ready to roll. If you opt to carry that rifle, you're covered for goat.

Just for clarity, the 30-06 is in a Ruger #1B that I have not had to do anything to except shoot it! Besides being beautiful on the outside, she's as pretty on the inside shooting the way it does!

Very nice!!! I think the critters better be nervous when you bring that out to play

Blessings,
Dan

Hmm, I guess that I need to Chrono that .30-06 of mine with 165 Partitions. I have always loaded 57.5 grains of IMR 4350 and Fed 210 primer. I just assumed velocity was about 2850 fps. I have killed an elk and several deer with it and it worked every time. I have had the rifle for so long that I just never bothered to Chrono it.

Nice groups!

It's not a given as we all know, but with the 26" barrel on the #1B I should get roughly 20-30 fps more per inch so if you have a 22" barrel on your 30-06, I "should get" about 80-120 fps more out of it, but nothings a given. It does look like it's stretching its legs though! The Partitions are what I chronographed, and I don't think the Accubonds will be exactly the same, but should be close. I guess I need to shoot a couple of those past the screens to see.

What length of barrel do you have?
David

My model 70 has a 24" tube David. i have ran some really hot loads that were getting 3100 fps with the 150gr Hornady Sp and H4350...but as I have written elsewhere, I am not the speed demon that many of the guys are. I think thats the glory of a 30-06, the numbers really aren't as glamorous as other rounds we have around today but it still gets the job done and sometimes at very long ranges.

The 165 AB, PT, or Sierra Gameking out of my 30-06 is just about as Apple Pie Perfect as can be.

Now that I have this awesome Winchester 70 Sporter in 300 WSM, I am constantly having to flip a coin to see who gets to go out hunting each time between it and the 30-06, I am really indecisive. I love the way they shoot and really shoot them both well.

It is possible to have a pair of perfect rifles!

Im like you, it's more about accuracy than it is blazing speeds although 3100 fps with a 150 gr. is pretty darn terrific. Yes it is possible to have a PAIR of perfect rifles and two Winchester Model 70's in 30-06 and 300 WSM would be about as perfect as it gets! You could not really ask for two better designed and efficient rounds. I shot one of the biggest antelope bucks I have ever taken with my 30-06 #1B shooting a Nosler 165 gr.solid-base boattail bullet, which was prior Ballistic Tip and AccuBond birth. It was also the farthest I have ever taken any game animal at. It did it's job and did it quite nicely.

I think you would have a trio of perfect rifles if you had a Model 70 chambered in 6mm Remington to go with the other two! Now that just gives me the vapors thinking about it!

I'd buy one, but Winchester will never make one. Too bad. The M70 magazine length is better than a 700 for a x57 cartridge.
