30-06 H4831sc instead of H4350

Very impressive velocities and accuracy being reported here. The '06 is capable of some excellent service when handled properly.

Those 2900fps loads from my -06 are reproducing Mike's groups shown above. This is from first day load workup with that rifle. Shortest load workup in my experience, ever, at only 9 shots!

That's a max charge in my rifle, I believe. I see no pressure signs, but it is max in several sources and over max in one or two sources for that combination, so work up carefully.

I've had good luck so far in a few 30-06 with IMR4064 for 150s, IMR4350/Varget for 165/168s, and IMR4350 or RL-22 for 180s.

Very nice shooting for them 30-06's. Those are some really great shooting loads for sure!

Dubyam & Bullet,
My groups with my 165 BT load mirror yours using 59.0 H4350. I get 2830 fps from a 22" barrel.
I was concerned with pressing the load in attempt to get 2900 or so due to the Ballistic Tip fragmenting as I read in some earlier post on the Forum. I tried 165 Accubonds but couldn't get the groups I have with the Ballistic Tip.

What have you experienced with your loads shooting Deer?

Thanks,
Don

Don, I am betting HAMMERED deer!!! Sorry, I couldn't resist, but that is a deer slaying combo as I have ever seen.. While a Whelen and 225 BT's is more my style!

Don, the Sierra 165gr HPBT has always exited the deer I have shot with it using my 30-06 even when using the 160gr in my 7mm Rem mag and the 165gr in my 300Win mag which Jerry here on this forum is a witness to the deer I hit with the 165 out of my 300Win. He was glassing up from me on a gas line and was looking at the deer that had come out on me and he just kept looking at it in his binoculars and thought I did not see it. Then he said, "I heard the shot and at that immediate moment the deer disappear from the view of my binoculars. I then looked down there it lay motionless". When we got to the deer he said to me, "that bullet exited" and I said "yes, they always do."

I also used for a couple of years the Ballistic Tip. They devastate deer at the velocities I moved them in my 06, a real deer killer. I really take my time and place my shots and they all go down, that is right, they all go down where they are hit and I believe shot placement along with dynamic shock puts them down in their tracks.

My rifle is a Colt Light Rifle. Thin sporter contour, 24" barrel. Tupperware stock, but at least a decent tupperware stock.

My results on deer are interesting. I shot a doe at 181yds (lasered) this past season. First shot went in between two ribs, out between two ribs, lungs were toast. No major body damage, though. She jumped, kicked, and spun for a second, and then kept walking around, so I shot her again. Second shot, she stepped forward and down in a hole right as the sear released, so I hit her just behind the shoulder, right through her spine. She dropped like a sack of doorknobs, and I lost about 6" of backstrap. She was a dead deer after the first shot, but neither she nor I knew it yet.

I fully expect traditional BT results if I hit a rib or the shoulder blade going in or coming out. In my estimation, BTs are pretty safe unless you shoot through the spine, as long as MV is below 3000fps. I'm willing to suffer a bit of meat loss for dropping a deer, for sure.

Yep, I will go along with that, I want the deer down, a little extra meat lose a times does not compare to the deer down for sure and dead.

Thanks for the input everyone. Scotty I got that! I like both calibers for different reasons, the Whelen though.......... Well what is there to say but Hey it's the HAMMER.

His Whelen might be the HAMMER, but my Big 8 is THOR who holds the hammer

Okay fellow reloaders. I got back from the range about 3 1/2 hours ago and had great results! I took most everyone's suggestions including different powders and also different primers including two test groups using magnum primers. I also included one other component test. I bought a box of Hornady 165 gr Interlock Flat Base. :):)

Lots of testing and barrel cool downs and more testing.
Bottom line for this specific Browning A-Bolt 30-06.
IMR 4350 is not only a winner, but a nice powder to get some fps performance without pressure issues. (I forgot that I used this last year on another hunters 30-06 reload as well after having issues with the H4350)

WLR primers also showed some significant assistance in the consistent fps category. They proved to help a test load come in second place. The biggest push to accuracy though came from using the flat base interlock instead of the boatr tail. I am sure with some work that boat tail could perform nicely but I just didnt want to spend a lot of time and money when the chances of any shot over 350-400 yards is pretty much nill.

Top Load:
Hornady 165 gr Interlock flat base; 58.4 gr IMR 4350; Federal 210 primers; average 2920 fps
..and yes that is 4 rounds in less than .296" (I had to look close and also see the cardboard in the back.

Second Load:
Hornady 165 gr Interlock flat base; 58.4 gr IMR 4350; WLR primers; average 2926 fps. A respectable .986" to work with if I want to.

For fun I also am working a brand new Kimber 8400 300 Win mag (this is a nice rifle)
Nosler 180 gr Partition; H4831sc; Federal 215 primers; average 3016 fps. this rifle is so sweet.

Steve, you gotta try some 165 PT's over your 30-06 Hornady load.. Talk about a great elk/deer cartridge.

That 300 Win Mag is a real shooter! Talk about THE elk load! Way to go buddy, great shooting!

338winmag,
Your #1 Load is a keeper, the Target is a Trophy, hang that baby up on the wall Buddy. I knew you would get that 30-06 shooting with a little effort. Great job. The 300 is looking good too.

Don

Bullet,
No question about it Buddy. That Big 8 is a SLEDGE HAMMER!

Don

Of course Don I am speaking theoretically when I say the Big 8 is a Sledge Hammer, because I haven't used it on game yet, but I just might be right even though it is theory for me

IMR4350 and H4350 or excellent for the 30-06 and the above targets posted by some of the guys is proof of how good 4350 is in a 06.

I think I will try the RL-17 in the 06 because in my 303 Brit it really is accurate pushing a 174gr bullet and very good velocities.
