30-06 reduced load

I need to get a reduced recoil load set up in a 30-06. Last year we used the corelokt reduced 125gr load an i would like to get a little more power than that.

Would you recommend going with the 125gr or 150gr BT? I'm thinking either the 125 at 2500 or the 150 at 2300 using a light charge of H4895. Anybody have any thoughts on which direction to go?

Thanks

I like the heavier bullets so I would lean towards the 150 gr BT. It will buck the wind better than the 125 gr BT.
The 150 gr at 2300 fps will work great on deer. I think you are on the right track.

Load the 150 grain BT and don't look back. It will be a great deer load at reduced velocities. I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

A 150 grainer @ 2300 fps is pretty slow boss, I would opt for at least a 2600 fps velocity and then you have a 300 Savage which will kick about like a 243 with 100 grain bullets. I don't like to tell anyone what to do, just my two cents worth. Hope you kill a big one this fall!

I know it's Really Slow. It's for my wife who has only been shooting rifles for a year, she is extremely recoil shy. I'll work it up as fast as I can go without her having issues with it.
She would be shooting my 30-30 if she liked lever actions.

I on the other hand have a real nice 300wm load pushing a 180 AB 3150fps. I should let her shoot one of those to see that her 30-06 doesn't kick.

Haha for sure but really even 2500 fps should be able to be handled by the recoil sensitive. Point is you want the cleanest kill you can and I'm not saying 2300 wont do it, it will, just sooner or later she is going to run out of those 45 yard broadside shots and want to try it further out and then reliability begins to get shakier. Thats all. Seems like I am preaching to the choir my friend.

I hear what you saying, and agree that a full power load would be light years better. the Remington managed load is a 125 at ~2300fps, a 150 at the same or slightly more will be a vast improvement. It was, to my surprise, very effective at 185yds last year on the two year old mule deer she shot. I'll let you know how it goes after we get to the range in the next week or so.

pick your bullet and load it with H-4895, long as you use at least 60% of the published max load its safe. check the youth loads data at hodgdon's web site.

I would run with the 125's for deer. I've used them outta the 308 in the Sierra 125gr PH and they work excellent. I would say anywhere in the 2300-2500 range would be excellent for any deer walking within a decent range. Scotty

I have killed lots of deer with the 125 BT running between 2650 and 3000 fps muzzle velocity and I can tell you it HAMMERS deer dead in their tracks. I am sure that even starting at 2500 fps it will do a fine job out to 200 yards or so. I shoot it at 3000 fps in a 308 rifle and the felt recoil is much less than a 150 gr going 2800 fps. If you want a bullet in the 150 gr range try the 155 gr Berger VLD. I shot it at 2650 fps out of a 30X47 HBR rifle and it turns the vitals to soup at 111 yards with base ball size exits.

I guess both would do just fine, but me being me and it being a lead bullet I would be leanig towards the 150 bt, shot my first elk with 150 grn rn at 2300 fps at muzzle , elk 80 yards .

If you need some 150 BT's, shooters pro shop (Nosler's store) has them on sale for the factory 2nd's right now. $12.95 a bag of 50 if I remember correctly.

I just bought 500 of the 150 BT planning on getting a load set up with them in the garand. I might have to order more if the wife ends up liking how they shoot.

I'm with Fotis and others who've directed you to the Hodgdon youth loads. I'm preparing some with the 125gr BT in 30-06 and some 110gr Accubonds in 270WSM for my 10yr old to start out on. I'm hoping for a range day within the next couple of weeks. Might have to make it an early Saturday morning thing to beat the heat.
