Is there a load that will put a 180 grain Partition in the same velocity category as a 300 win? or close? I see that 63 grains of RL22 will put it up to 3002 FPS which is close enough, but is there any thing else?

Ackley improved would be very close. A standard 06 shooting a 180 at 3000 is a pretty high goal. Manuals stated fps and actual fps from my rifles are not the same at all.
RL-22 would be my first choice of powders to use to try to reach that goal.
How long is your barrel?

Where did you see that? What was the barrel length? Under "normally accepted" parameters, it would be difficult to get 3000FPS with 180 grain bullet in a standard 30-06.

I've heard of some impressive numbers using Norma MRP powder, but I've not heard an honest 3000 fps.

Maybe with a 30-32 inch barrel............

......................In my Sierra manual, comparing both the 30-06 and 300 Win both with 26" barrels using 165 gr bullets, the top velocity shows 2900 fps for the `06 (56.0 gr. IMR 4350) and 3300 fps for the 300 Win.

The `06 AI gets bumped up to 3000 fps from the 26" barrel. No load listed shows RL 22. Regardless, using RL22 or not, I don`t think that the `06 will come to within 150 to 200 fps of the 300 Win using a 165 grainer which would make it a closer comparison.

Max load for the `06 165 grainer using RL19 is 55.8 gr @ 2800 fps. Although a slower burner, 63 grs. of RL22 with the 165 gr bullet will be over maximum and not even come close to the 300 Win even if you could load 63 grains of the RL22.

No animal on earth can tell the difference between 2800 fps and 3000 fps. If you need the velocity for longer range shooting get a .300 mag. Could think of worse things than buying a new rifle.

You won't be able to get the 30-06 to 300 Win Mag levels. You can however, down load a 300 Win Mag to 30-06 levels.

You wouyld still be pushing your luck and pressure pretty hard with the 165 gr as well in a standard 30-06 chamber JD. No harm in asking though.

It's also in the #6 manual, but it's a very compressed load as Nosler states the load density for 63gn of RL-22 at 114%. Now, you may get 3002 from a 165gn bullet with 63gn of RL-22, but it may be a 3"or more group at 100yds. Nosler states that in their test barrel, 59gns at 2812fps was the most accurate load tested. My question to you is, how much accuracy will you give up to achieve velocity?????

Personally, I won't give up any accuracy for more velocity.

I wish you well on your load developement.

Me neither. In the original post I asked about a 180 grain. I mis read the load data and later found it to be for the 165. That is why I had asked about it. I made A MISTAKE.

Well, better to make the mistake on a forum than during the reloading process.

I understand that it may or is a listed load. But things to remember,
load manuals are guides only, not necessarily reality in your barrel. So much depends on the chamber and how it done and the actual bore.
A few .001" here, a few .0001" there, can make all the difference. Length of the throat and so on. That's why they tell you to start low and work up.
I have some custom barrels that are tight, I have learned from this particular maker to start lower yet. As more oftern than not, starting loads are pushing issues. Each barrel has it own characteristics, likes and dislikes. One never knows, but if more veloctiy then say mid-range is desired, then I suggest moving up in case capacity. As stated, accuracy and proper bullet choice is more critical.
Personally I feel, a 165 gr. at 2900fps will have all the energy needed for game that bullet weight can handle at normal ranges. And for the most part, at ranges a lot farther than majority can shoot accurately anyhow.
