.30-30 at 300 yards today

Went to the range today with three hunting rifles:

.30-30 Glenfield with a 2.5x Leupold, sighted in at 100 yards

.25-06 Rem 700 CDL with a 6x Leupold, sighted in at 300 yards
.30-06 Rem 700 CDL with an old 2-7x Redfield, sighted in at 200 yards

I like all these rifles. Started out with the .30-30 as I hadn't shot it in a while. First shot was at a paper plate at 100 yards, from sitting, no bench, no sticks, nothing. Just sat my rear on the ground, centered up the crosshairs and pressed. The Glenny gently nudged my shoulder. Well what do you know? The 170 gr Winchester made a hole in the plate, just a little left of center.

That made me smile. And I was about to fire again, when I was tempted... You see I'd just set up a steel gong target at 300 yards, intended for my .25-06 & .30-06 rifles... So, I went to prone, steadied the Glenfield as best I could. Figured my holdover. Said thanks that there was no wind or mirage to speak of... Wished for a little more than the 2.5x scope, and pressed. The rifle again nudged my shoulder, and CLANG!

I'd say it was a pretty good hit. If this was hunting season, those shots would have hammered one at 100 yds, and another at 300 yds. I'll take that from an old lever action Glenfield with factory ammo and a 2.5x scope.

Don't be afraid to stretch the legs on your 336's gents. They're good rifles.

Regards, Guy

Guy you always impress me with your shooting skills, once again job well done.

Guy,

Nicely done! I've shot my 45-70 at 300 yds and it is a hoot. Tons of fun lobbing lead at long range.

Guy, you really know your rifle's capabilities :). Good shooting my friend!!!
Thank you for posting>

Thanks guys. Yeah, that was a camera-worthy shot to me.

BTW, love that doggone target. The dimples you see in it are from some steel-core military bullets that I didn't know were being shot at it. Phooey. Even 300 gr bullets from the .375 H&H don't phase that target. Nothing but a splash on it from any soft point or hollow point ammo I've tried.

I'm using a cool little adapter that lets the target hang from a standard fence post.

The targets are really well made, here in Wenatchee, by my buddies at Precision Tactical:

Very cool Guy! Man, I might need to take the 348 out and try it at the longer ranges as well. It's about like the 30-30 but with 250's...

I do love to shoot the lever rifles. Way more accurate than they are given credit for..

Thats good shooting friend. I always laugh a little when I hear the words "brush rifle."

I grew up shooting an old .300 Savage in a Savage 99EG with a 4x scope on top. The last time I took her out hunting years ago I took a whack at a mule deer doe at about 275 yards. I hit way low the first shot. The doe took about 6 or 8 steps and stopped. I raised about 12" over her back and let fly. That old 150 grain Corelokt knocked her down dead with a hit through the lungs. Had a near perfect rest on an "H" brace in the fence and no wind. Not a shot I typically would take on a deer with a .300 Savage but it was an "ah-ha" moment for me as that was the farthest shot I had ever attempted with that old gun.

Those old lever guns still got what it takes to hit stuff out there a couple or three footbal fields away.

My Dad still uses his old .250-3000 in Savage 99 each fall for deer.

Just something about a Levergun. I love my Model 70's but a Savage 99 is a close second for my favorite action type.

Savage 99 is just cheatin'

You get to use high-intensity cartridges & pointy bullets!

Consider sighting that .300 Savage of yours at about 200 yards... With the 4x scope, you'd never have a problem out to 300, none at all... With 150's the little .300 Savage gets real close to the performance of traditional .308 & .30-06 factory ammo.

Yeah, I enjoyed stretching the legs of that ol' Glenfield/Marlin .30-30, they shoot better than most folks believe.

My grandpa killed a TRUCKLOAD of whitetails with this old rifle..

I have shot it out to 200 and even with the peep, it does mighty danged well. Need to shoot it more.

Great shooting Guy! That's awsome! And Scotty, that 99 is cool as heck. It sure pisses me off that bit*h widow of my dad's best friend didn't give me my dad's collection of 99's back.

Guy,
That is some nice shooting! You've tried the 30-30 & 25-06; how about the 375 off shooting sticks? Just practice for Africa.

Smashing idea!

The .375 has already been in the hills with me, after black bear. No shot yet.

That thing has done just fine at 300+ yards on bear... It really has become a favorite hunting rifle, though more powerful than I'll ever truly need. Someday when I'm old & feeble I may replace it with another Number One in something more appropriate, like a .30-06 or 7x57.

Had an opportunity a couple of years ago to see what my 336 in .35 Rem wearing a 1.5X5 Leupold would do at extended ranges. We have a 600 yard range that wasn't being used at the time by our military shooters and I started at 100 yards and worked out to 400 (just for fun). Out to 200 everything worked fine. At 300 it took two shots to find the bull. The first shot was at 8 oclock just outside an 8 inch circle. The 2nd shot went within three inches of center. At 400 it got interesting trying to figure out drop. After three shots I found the bull but drop was really significant. Even at that range I don't think I'd want to be on the receiving end of a 200 grain bullet.
