I've seen a number of articles in the past about shorter range 30/06 loads using 30/30 type bullets.
One of the places I hunt is public land in East Texas, Davy Crockett National Forest. It can get really thick there. You can be 10 feet off of a forest service road and not know it is there until someone happens to drive past. Needless to say when you get back in it to where the deer are and the other hunters aren't 50 yards could be considered extreme range.
What I've been thinking about is working up a load for my Win 1895 using something like the 150 gr BST or Sierra 170 gr FP. Another that is tempting would be the Sierra 125 gr HP/FP. Not really thinking reducing velocities, would really like the velocities around the 30/06 starting loads for the weights. Even with one hit solidly and gushing it can take 30 mins to follow a 30 yard trail in daylight.
Anyone try anything along these lines before? What end result? Ideas?
Thanks,
Jimmy
