Loading some 30-30 win. for my little brother this deer season. question...........Should i use the 170 rn noslers i have or should i use the 110 gr rn hornadys that i also have.

My thoughts are this, i know his skills and will limit his range with that rifle because he dosnt have the expierence to shoot real far yet. I gona say 100 to 150 yards.

170 gr would be a good thumper, but the 110's will be a little flatter shooting for him and probably a bit easier on him. Better velocities also. The 110 gr should be plenty to kill a deer right?

Thanks for the input guys.

I would use the 170's. While the .30-30 will surely shoot 150+ normally most .30-30's have the range you specified of around 100-150yrds. I just don't see the 110's being a stellar performer for deer hunting, especially past 100yrds. Make up some loads with the 110's to let him get some trigger time and then use the 170's for the hunt.
Personally, for my brother's .30-30 I load the 150gr Speer Hotcores with H4895. He has dropped several deer with that load.

+1 to what maanbr said. I shoot a 30-30, and I love the 150gr Speers. The 110gr Hornadys are really not sufficient for deer sized game, and we're not talking about significant recoil here. If it's a problem for him, get a towel and use at the range, or get a recoil pad that slips on the gun, or one of those pads that straps on your shoulder, for the hunt. Practice with good form will allow him to get used to the recoil. I started with a 30-30 at 13yrs old, and it was fairly easy to get comfortable with, and I got to where I could shoot under 3" out to about 150yds pretty handily. That's about all you can ask from a kid with a 30-30, and it will surely kill deer all day long.

150's and 170's are the 30-30's bread & butter.
