30 November 2013 Virginia Deer Hunt

I bet :) do you lead them at all, I haven't shot too many animals running other than my grizz but that's a different story.........

Gerry, it is funny you mention it. Brian is the hunter that got me hunting with his club and hounds a few years ago. Most guys run shotguns loaded with buckshot, and most do really well as the shooting is real close for the most part and fast. I still chose to use a rifle, and ran my 45-70 and 358 Winchester. Both of those worked fine for me.

Where I am at now, we are required to run shotguns for our county, but again, I run a slug. I also run the 1.5x5 Leupold on it and it never comes off 1.5X. I don't have any trouble picking up deer in the scope, and when that slug hits, it usually ends them right there or shortly thereafter, plus, I have the reach if I catch a deer sneaking away further than the effective range of buckshot.

So, short story long, yeah, upclose, I lead them and have done so fairly effectively, just like you would if you wingshooting. Brian and I have talked many a hour about the benefits of both of them. Brian chooses to carry a rifle and a shotgun where he thinks there could be an opportunity for both. Couple different ways to skin the cat. I imagine once I get it figured out the way I wanna do it, I'll end up moving and putting the shotgun away for the Model 70's anyhow!

Under those conditions my 35 Whelen would be the best of my firearms that I currently own, A BLR like yours in 358 Win would be pretty sweet too.

Despite having a Hawkeye chambered in .358 Win., I still miss my BLR. It shot tiny groups and struck down game with surprising authority. Fortunately, I still have a couple of .356s.

The 356 would be perfect for hunting like that, the 307 would be great too.......

Yeah, there are a couple of those in my stable as well.

Had a 307 the only Winchester I have ever owned, should have kept it but you all know how that goes...... It was a great gun.

And the .356 is just that much better. Yeah, it is a favourite for me.

They do pop up from time to time. Maybe one day I'll buy one.

I found both of mine down east, and the prices were surprisingly low.

I always did my jump shooting on whitetail with a Model 94, .32 Special. Used to practice a lot though when I was doing that jump shooting on whitetail.

Congrats to your son and to you. I just read your story to my wife as our son had a similar experience a couple years ago. It is great to see a family hunting together.

Much to be proud of there Scott. You have some very fine looking children & an awesome experience they'll all remember for life!

Watching my boys become hunts has been one of the greatest privileges I've enjoyed as a father. You have much to be proud of!

Scotty,
Nothing like hunting with the Family, good to see the kids involved hunting. They learned from the best on how to make the lead fly!
