300 H&H

Now that my fall big game hunting season is over, I'm retreating to the reloading bench with the thought of creating an elk load for my 300 H&H. While I did get lucky on my cow elk using 140 gr AB's in my 280, I thought something a bit heavier might be better medicine for critters the size of a 600-700 pound elk. The 280 w/140 AB's took the heart out of the cow but should that one shot have hit heavy bone in the shoulder, things might have turned out different.

Recently I was given a brand new, never opened box of 165 Gr Barnes TSX bullets and thought I would give these a look. If I cannot get this combo to work, I still have my 300 Win mag and of course, the 280 to fall back on.

Anyone have a good recipe for 300 H&H using Barnes 165 gr TSX I have on hand?
I do have IMR 4350, 4831 and RL22 powders available and lots of WLR primers.

Barnes lists 70 grains of IMR4831 and 68 grains of IMR4350 as maximum charges with their 165 grain TSX.

Possibly a coincidence but we had the same problem with the same bullet and ended up giving them away.

In the 300 H & H we have used the, 180 and 200 A Frames and the 180 and 220 Woodleigh successfully. IOHO, the 300 H&H is at its best with the heavier gr bullets

I drove a 140 AB out of my 270WSM through the shoulders of a large bull elk at around 150 yards for a finisher shot a few years ago, that bullet crushed both shoulders and was found in the skin. I am of the same belief as you, that a heavier bullet would have probably exited, but I am not sure it would have killed any quicker. The 7mm 140 is a tough bullet.

I think when you get into the elk class animals, the above 30 and above makes a good impression.

As too the 165 TSX, that is a good one as well, I can't imagine you wouldn't smoke elk with that bullet running along at 3100+ either. Should get excellent penetration as well.

Here is where some of your powders fall out in QL. If you want to see something more specific, let us know.

Never used the Barnes bullets but my 300 H&H eats 4831 like it's candy! I would start with that powder and only look elsewhere if it doesn't produce what you are looking for. RL-22 is another I've had some success with.

In the 300 H & H we have used the, 180 and 200 A Frames and the 180 and 220 Woodleigh successfully. IOHO, the 300 H&H is at its best with the heavier gr bullets

The 300 H&H was made for heavier bullets.

While I agree that the H&H does handle the 180-200grain bullets really well, I also have a soft spot for the 165's out of this cartridge. It is a superb all around loading that is equally adapt for anything from antelope up to elk with the right bullet such as the Partition or AccuBond. Nothing wrong with having one load that will serve you for just about any species of big game you would want to hunt! A 165 AccuBond at 3100fps is pretty strong medicine! Now the 190 or 210 LR AB will be a really interesting combo that will breath a bit more long range life into this old sweetheart of a cartridge!

I am with you buddy... Seems like the old 300 might get some more use. Be cool to see what it does..

Here are some numbers I ran in Applied Ballistics using the info for the 210gr LR AB with a MV of 2750fps, 10mph 3 o'clock wind. Not too bad for such an old cartridge!
