Made the mistake of heading into the local sporting goods shop for a fly reel and line this morning. They didn't have what I wanted, so I made another mistake and looked over the used gun rack... Uh Oh...

For $349 I can get what's reported to be an unfired .300 Win mag, Interarms Mark X Mauser!

It's sitting in a fairly ugly Ram Line synthetic stock, and has a 3-9x Bushnell scope atop. I'm not a huge fan of the stock or the scope, but they're both hunt-worthy. The rifle could be hunted with as is! Trigger pull felt decent. The metal is in perfect condition - I didn't even see any wear marks on the barrel or action! Hinged floorplate. Typical over-built Mauser action...

Dang. No I didn't buy it - I don't need it - but dang... I can't stop thinking about it either!

Put that thing in a better stock and swap on a nicer scope - or just hunt with it the way it is... I've already got boxes of ammo, brass, dies, a mess of .30 cal bullets and many years experience loading for and hunting with a .300 Win mag... $349... Wow... Just might make a return trip!

Do it! I need my daily fix of gun porn!! As I sit here pondering ideas for my Pre-64 stock and bottom metal!

Yeah, I can see your dilemma, Guy. Brass and bullets lying around seem somehow to multiply into rifles. Well, it would work really well for mulie this fall, or Wyoming antelope, or black bear, or...

The action alone would bring 400-450.00 on Accurate Reloading if it's in like new condition.

That is a pretty good price.
The 300 Win Mag is an excellent all around cartridge. Tough to pass that one up.

Going to listen to my own advice and ignore this good hunting rifle.

Cool as it is, I just don't need it. Somebody is going to get a good deal on a good rifle. I hope they understand what they're getting.

Guy

Man, that does sound like a great rifle Guy. What a way to start a build for sure!

Might have to pass this to Brian.. I think he is looking for a good CRF action.

If that had been a 7mmRemMag, Guy, I'd have you get them to ship it to me. Having brass, dies, and components would make it hard not to grab the darn thing at that price, for sure...

Wow! All I see around here is used guns with new prices on them. What a grab that would be. Tough choice Guy.

Or in my neck of the woods a used and abused 700 ADL in 25-06 with a cheap Simmons scope for $600. Or go to Cal-Ranch and buy a brand new in box ADL with cheap Remington scope in .270 for $475 go figure that one out!

It's whatever the market will bear. Most people selling are pretty optimistic about what they have.

A problem I've got is that I just plain like rifles!

I keep trying to remember that at this point I'm far better off spending my money loading, shooting, hunting with and maintaining the guns I've got, rather than seeking to stuff yet another rifle into my already over-crowded gun safe.

The ol' .30-06 could use a new barrel.
The .308 is getting there. Again.
My son's .257 Wby/Mauser is STILL with the gunsmith - and likely needs a new barrel too.

I'm trying hard to resist the 6mm's at Shooter's Pro Shop - my favorite 6mm bullet - because we've got enough 6mm bullets on hand to kill that old barrel too, while filling tags and the freezer.

So... It's not like I don't already have some rifle projects on hand - I should have never even looked at that used rifle rack!

About the only thing that's been persistently calling me this year is a Number One light sporter in .30-06 - somehow it seems like a perfect understudy for my .375 H&H. I could go with the .308 Win version as well. Must resist for now - at least unless I want to unload some of my existing rifles, an increasingly attractive option.

Man, with a new tube on your 30-06 and the loads available today, your 30-06 would be pretty hard to mess with. I like the 300's, but there is alot of merit to a good 30-06 with 165's for the smaller stuff and your 220 load for anything that just needs some extra killing! Sounds like you have some barrels to buy! That 257W is really looking like a project worth keeping and tuning up.

Guy,

You're undoubtedly correct--rifles can be an addiction. Unfortunately, many who frequent this forum are utterly undisciplined in this regard and try to coerce everyone else into buying more rifles. I'm not naming any named, but you know who I'm speaking of, don't you Scotty? Kurt? Uh, you get my drift.

Whoa! I just told him to look at new barrels! I am the good guy here!

I'm not myopic, I know I have a problem. However, I am showing signs of improvement... just today, for instance, I have hardly been looking at rifles at all.

Now Ruger Bisley single actions, that's a different story...

Kurt,

I'm mightily impressed by the progress you're making. :p It just warms the cockles of my heart to see your effort. Wonder when it will pay any dividends?

Of course part of my decision to not buy it was based on having a .300 WSM Model 70 that I almost never use...

Sheesh!
