I'm thinking about picking one of these up fairly soon. Has anybody worked with this cartridge? Any favorite loads? Thanks!

I think I'd be inclined to get a WSM if I was wanting a compact magnum.
The availability of brass if no other reason. I've also not seen much loading data on the Ruger proprietary caryridge if you reload.
Just my $0.02. :)

I am inclined to agree with Vince. The .300 RCM is basically a .30-06 with a 20" barrel.

That and ammo and components availability are not great.

If you want a .30-06, then get a .30-06 - if you want a compact magnum, look no further than a .300 WSM.

Just my $0.02 as well -

Good Luck -

They made a couple neat rifles in that chambering... 20" carbines with iron sights- they were gone in one catalog year though.

On paper, with a 24" barrel the RCM looks good...in the 20" rifles Ruger produced, not so much.

The .300WSM is one of the more popular short mags- good availability and performance wise it does work as advertised.

My business/hunting partner has one in a Christenson rifle. It was already chambered, and he fell in love with the rifle. The factory Hornady ammo shoots exceptionally well, though we are keeping every bit of brass to reload someday.

If I were to buy a 300 like that outright, it would be the 300 WSM. There are just too many advantages to it vs the Ruger.

I don't need a "magnum" and I'm a Ruger guy... how about now? I love the look of the pseudo Express rifles with sights and the 20" barrel. That or the No. 1A is what I'm gonna get. I've already got a myriad of rifles to shoot deer and elk with so this would just add on to the pile.

... :?: RCM/ Ruger Compact Magnum, anywho, in a short (18-20") barrel, the RCM actually beats the .300 WSM & .300 WM (Shooting Times 09/15), still quite a step up from a .308. Don't know how well you could match the proprietary powders handloading, & finding brass will probably be an issue, but hey, in the specific rifles yer looking @ it's a winner...

A friend bought a old Rem 700 25/06 I had that was just collecting dust, so I'm going to get the Hawkeye. I have several No. 1 rifles but none of the 1st Gen Express rifles, this will likely segway into a start of that collection.

Sounds as if you did well. Yeah, I could see beginning a collection of those particular rifles. (y)
