Remington 180 or 200 gr Partitions. Problem is will you gun like them?

jiggs,

What are you going to be hunting with your 300RUM and what range are you going to be shooting?

JD338

My Brother just purchased a 300rum in a 700 rem. After fighting thru five boxes of Rem Premium 180 grain scirroco bullets at $45 per box, he had me look it over because it was hard to open the bolt after each and evey shot. I looked over the brass and each had a cratered primer and had a ring around the body just at the start of the shoulder that was .0015" wider than the body just below. The gun is flawed and I'm sure Rem will take care of that but the loads are way to hot in my opinion having cratered primers and excessive expansion of the brass and difficulty opening he bolt. All classic signs of hot loads.

The first ammo that went' through my 300RUM was the Remmington 180's
Could not get good groups, but was more interested in harvesting the brass so I could relaod for it. I'm still playing with different combo's till I really find somethng I like... However....I doubt the factory ammo is anywhere clost to "too hot" There are a lot of guys in here reloading for the 300RUM and this appears to be one round that likes HOT. ( I know, every gun is different, and appears this may be one of them )
Keep us all informed of how this works out for him.

Factory ammo for the RUMs are slim. I only bought a box to sight in the scope so I could start load developement. I'm using 200gn AB propelled by 95gn of Retumbo. Harvested my second hog with this rifle, the first kill with the 200AB and my longest shot to date - 290yrds, held dead on, bang flop. Took out the front right leg, went throught the chest and took out the left leg before exiting. I'm really starting to like this rifle. Guess I'm a recoil junky. Oh, I'm sighted in at 2.5" high at 100yds.

Hope you find a load that works for you.

What was the exit like??

Everythign I shot with my 300 RUM and those 200g AB's left a hole the size of my fist.

I didn't find the exit hole until I skinned it. Granted the meat damage on the entrace was due to hitting bone, but I was glad to see the exit wasn't bad at all, about a nickle, maybe quarter, size hole throught the skin

Hmmm interesting. Hogs must be one of those animals where your just not going to get big exits maybe?? Even with hitting bone, I"m very surprised the exit wasn't much larger. Then again, we dont have hogs around here so I have no experience what so ever with them.

Really the only animals I shot with my 300 RUM were elk and bear, and like I said, they left fist sized holes from 200-525 yards. But then again, I'm a shoulder shooter so hitting bone really helps initiate the expansion.

shot some fedrals 200 gr Patitions and they shot better 1.21 .
When I loaded up some 200grain accubonds I noticed in I had a lot of free bore so I am loading to my magizine is this normal with this caliber

Regarding the Flawed, Remington 300 RUM, Sportsmans wearhouse gave him a replacement rifle and replaced the ammo. Refreshing no hassle outcome.

Clean the chamber and make a chamber cast. If the rifle was purchased new, I would check their policy on returns. But it sounds like you have a very dirty chamber. Can't see him shooting that much ammo before seaking help. Most of the rifle problems I see are due to operator error. Not saying it isn't the rifle but what you write points me in that direction.Rick.

Gee Rick, that's a great idea. I'll call him up and have him go back to Sportsmans Wearhouse, ask for the old flawed gun back. Then I'll make a chamber cast of the chamber that we can already tell is flawed by the expansion ring aound the shoulder of the brass. Sound's like fun??? Nah, instead I think I'll just make a dentist appointment.

Please call my office, I would like to have you in the chair. Might be able to help that attitude a little.Rick.

Gosh & Golly I'm sorry. I didn't realize you girls were such sensitive souls. That Horse was dead and burried. Shooting it again serves no purpose.

Obviously the measureable expansion ring around the shoulder was due to the rifle being dirty. Operator error, obviously. Why didn't I think of that?

Here's a tip for you. Read before you post. I can see why operater error is prevelent in your thoughts.

I am glad you were able to solve the problem by returning the rifle, sorry it took you and your brother so many shots to learn nothing. The reason I posted was not to try to educate you and your brother since you already know how to fix a real or imagined problem, return. However, some posters cannot return a rifle or would like to solve the issue themselves, the additional post was for them.
I see by your posts that you are quite immature and obviously not in need of help or suggestion. Don't know why you posted in the first place since you had already decided on a course of action. May any future posts from you contain useable information.

Well, Mr. Maturity, Why are your posts always full of demeaning snide little comments. Could they be designed to make yourself feel superior in your own special way, "operator error"..."clean the gun" ..."so many shot's to learn nothing" Seems like you have an inferiority complex. Go ahead and lash out make yourself feel better. We are all learning a lot from you professor. Perhaps you could bless us with another of your brilliant insightful dissertations.
