Which would you rather be packing for elk with the 300 win mag shooting a 180 grain AccuBond at 3000 because it doesnt like the 200 grain accubonds and the 338 win mag shooting 225 grain at 2850? the range would be out to 450 yards.

Either one would do for elk but I am a big fan of the 338 cal so that would be my pick. The 338 Win Mag with the 225 gr AB would make for a really great elk round.

Either round is plenty for elk.... I'd take the one that fit the situation the best.. ie lighter rifle for hiking ? etc

Go with the 338. Like the "push" from it when I pull the trigger more than the "whack" from the 300.

I'm a believer in frontal area, .338 wins in that dept.

It is no secret that I do not like any 338's.

Absolutely no proper foundation for it....just an unfounded anti-338 cal complex----- how honest is that????

I LOVE THE 375'S AND ABOVE!

all of the above said I have one thing to say......................

THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT!

+1 powerstroke, use the one that fits the situation and the one you shoot most profeciently.
Either of the Winchester Mags are seriously potent medicine, especially with Partitions or AccuBonds.

In comparing both the 225 and the 180 gr AB`s, 2850 and 3000 fps, the Hornady external ballistics table shows these two very close in the downrange trajectory dept.

Both have enough downrange energy to do the job at 400 to 500 yards. I`d base the decision more on the rifle for weight, carrying ease, etc.

Have you tried everything possible to get the 200 AB`s to group better? Change the powder, the charge, the seating depths?

Versus the 180 gr AB @ 3000 fps, the 200 AB (.588 BC) @ 2850 to 2900 would be a liitle better for long range elk medicine coming from the 300 Win.

ah, this ones easy. .338RUM. I can put up with a little extra recoil and a pound or so more weight because when that trigger is pulled and the sight picture is correct the animal is DRT. I've seen it happen too many times to call it a fluke. Nothing like frontal area.

O ya, the 338 RUM is my choice too. I have shot a few animals with my 338 RUM and everyone never took a step after the hit. From a Black Bear at 30 feet to 5 pt Bull Elk at 350 yds, all were DRT.
Frontal area x bullet weight x velocity + .5 MOA / recoil that I can handle = DRT

Oh Yeah!
The 338 wins every time for elk. More shock + penetration .The animal is less likely to run off and be lost. With a ballistic reticule and a range finder the trajectory difference we used to worry about isn't much of a factor any more.

This might not be the smartest thing to say and I'm more than likely going to get a bunch of crap for it but I feel the same way about the .308 cals and POP does about the .338s. I have a 338 WM and have killed two bulls with 225 ABs one at 425 and another at about 200. Of the two choices the 338 gets my vote!

No you won't.....That is the great thing about this forum. Feel free to air your opinion.

Heck, one of the reasons I do not like the 338's is that I am jealous!

They are the biggest caliber that get the attention of most bullet manufacturers. Much more than my beloved 375 and 416. High BC long range choices rock in the 338. I guess they are not sick in the head like I am and see the 416 a a close quarter buffalo gun as opposed to a 500 yard goat gun!
