Just recently picked up a nice little Tikka Hunter stainless and was wondering what powders would be good to try. Been many years since I last owned a WM and was thinking of trying the 180AB or PT.

That's an easy one boomer68. H4831. I do like RL-22 if I run out of H4831. Those two powders will make those 180,s scoot and shoot.

Congratulations on the Tikka; it is a sweet rifle. The cartridge is easy to satisfy with quite a variety of powders. IMR4831, H4831SC, IMR7828 or IMR7828SSC, RL22 or RL25, H1000, VN160 all work well propelling 180 grain bullets in the 300 Win.

Mine shoots 1/4 inch groups with a full load of H-4350. There are probably better powders but I never have felt the need to change. The same goes with bullets, the 180 PT has been killing elk for me and my family since the early 1960's. From my perspective that's one of the best big game bullets out there. I have found the AB to be a little difficult to get accuracy out of, as have several here. The 300WM is one of the best elk cartridges out there.

H1000 is where its at IMHO! I shoot 180 NAB/NP and 200 gr the same. This is where I start and then H4831, RL22, etc.....

Boomer,

75.0 grs RL22 and 180 gr bullets shot sub MOA in three different rifle.

My remmy 700 BDL shoots those 180 AB,s thru the same hole with 75 gr. of RL-22. It is a sweet load for me as well. (y) (y)

Great, will give RL22 a try. What OAL did you use with the AB or PT? 3.330?

I load real long for a rem 700 top loader. 3.6 for the 180 AB and and 3.565 for the 180 PT. If the tikka is a detachable mag you will be stuck with mag length. What ever that is.

Another bullet I am thinking of trying is the 168gr TTSX. Has anyone loaded this in the Win Mag and has a suggestion for powders to try?

I loaded to max magazine length.
Can't help with the 168 gr bullets, I've only loaded 180's.

I loaded some 165's in my 300 Win Mag and IMR4831 and RL22 worked well there as well.

My Nephew in Colorado is using the 190 ABLR bullet with excellent results in his 300 Win Mag. He uses IMR4831. He claims it gives him the best speed and groups over RL22 and some other powders used. His loads are with Win Brass and Fed 215 Primers.

He killed a 5 x 5 Bull in 2014 at 437 yards, one shot, said he took 5 steps and collapsed.
Internal damage was significant to the lungs, he stated the lungs were a complete mess, extensive damage done.

Hope that helps you.

Don

I have switched to the 165gr Ballistic tip in the 300 win mag. For Accuracy loads. Shoot 220gr Hornady for Cascade Elk. But I have not had that tag in 5yr. IMR7828 has proven to really Improve the Accuracy in a couple 300 win mags. I stocked up on it.

I run H1000 in my .300 Win.Mag., it gives great accuracy and velocity with 215 Berger's. My buddy also runs it in his .300 with 180 AB's, gets 1/2 minute groups regularly and 3100 fps.

Thanks. I am definitely going to try H1000.
