One of the guys I deer hunt with got a new Savage 300 WSM over the weekend for 2nd rifle season elk tag he drew in Colorado and wanted to know what factory ammo everyone had used in the past?

He's going to pool his money with another guy and try a couple different brands and see what shoots best while breaking in the barrel. I recomended Winchester supreme 180gr Accubonds and to try the Federal premium 180gr Partition. I also told him he should've started this a little sooner! But at least he still has time to get it ready.

One or the other of those will likely work for him. Either is more than adequate for elk. Pity he doesn't hand load, or it would take only a trip or two to the range to be set.

+1 on the 180gn Nosler Bullets. I've used both on Elk. Use the one that shoots best.

Nosler also offers ammunition, loaded with our favorite bullets too.

I would see what shoots best. I have had great luck with the Winchester Supreme ammo. It shoots just about as well as any handload I have for my 270WSM. Haven't used any factory ammo for the 300WSM, but with a 180 AB or PT, I don't think you could make a bad choice, if it shoots.

The Winchester supreme shot best out of mine. Federal premium with nosler partitions shoot good too.

When I bought .300 WSM ammo for elk hunting it was the 180 grain TBBC, Federal ammo. Ammo is the cheapest component of an elk hunt expense and I wanted the terminal performance of the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw ammo. I bought (3) boxes and used this factory ammo for elk hunting. This ammo or the Partition Federal 180 grain. Both work great and cost about the same. The Partitions are slightly more accurate but Minute of a DRT Elk is big enough to not worry about benchrest accuracy.

180gr Accubonds in Winchester Supreme or other manufacturers. Next the 180gr XP3's from WS-Elite would get the nod. Find what shoots best.

Me, reloads of 180gr Accubonds do the trick here in Alberta for everything...bear, moose, elk, deer, wolf/coyote...lol

When my .300 WSM had the factory twist, Winchester 180 Accubonds was hard to beat. Shot as good as my loads.

My friend's 300WSM loves the Win Super-X Power Max bonded and the Federal Fusion both in 180gr. I've always had excellent luck with the Federal Vital-Shok offerings with different cartridges. I wouldn't look past the Speer Trophy Bonded Tips either as well as all the previous recommendations.

I tried multiple brands of ammunition in my 300 wsm six years ago when I bought it (I had not started reloading yet). The federal fusion 180 grain was the only bullet that shot close to 1" groups so I used it for elk that first year. The fusion was cheap but killed the elk in one shot at 250 yards.

I've used the Fusion ammo (338 Federal) on Elk before and it performed perfectly. I would have to believe the 180gn 30 cal should do the same.

I talked too him yesterday and he tried the Federal premium 180gr Partitons and Winchester supreme with 180gr Accubonds and said they both shot great and decided to go with the Partitions.

A few more range sessions and he'll have the barrel broke in.

I can't think of much hunting where a 180 PT out of a 300 Magnum is a bad idea.

Any premium bullet like, Partition, AccuBond, or norma oryx etc  ..any of these well put elk in the frezzer for sure  ...Shot placement is the key..Lou..My favorite is the nosler Partition, and norma oryx in my 270wsm...they both shoot awsome, and well get the job done just fine, Lou

He picked up a box of 180 gr federal fusion ammo to finish up breaking in the barrel and I went in half on it just too see how they would shoot. They shot lights out in both of our rifles yesterday afternoon!

I told him that bullet is the Speer Deepcurl and from what I've read it's been everything Speer claimed it would be. I wouldn't hesitate to use this ammo for Elk and Moose if I didn't reload!

Same here. Any decent 180 out of a 300 Magnum is going to be awesome. I like the Speer's new Deep Curl bullets. Pretty nice bullet for the money.
