300 WSM Compressed Loads

I am new to Short Mags - I notice alot of the load data for the 300 WSM are compressed loads. I am looking at loading 180 gr Accubonds w/ IMR7828 and the load densities are 98%, 101%, and 104%. It doesn't seem to give much room to be working up to a max load.
 
You won't notice compression on many stick powders until you reach 110% of case capacity. There is lots of room to settle powder. Tap the case with a glass rod or use a drop tube to compress the load if it is tight.
 
Bob, I use a drop tube for all of my loading, even less than fully compressed loads. IMR7828 is a decent one with 180's but don't overlook RL17, RL19, H/IMR4350 for the 180's. I had much better luck with the slightly faster powders in the WSM with 180's.
 
Thanks for the tips guys - I had never heard of a drop tube, I will try one out. I couldn't pass up on the IMR7828; now I'm wishing I had held off. Have you ever used Hybrid 100 V for the 300 WSM? Do your powder recommendations go for 165/168 Grain bullets as well?
 
Yup, I just loaded up some 165 AB's, 71 grains of RL19, CCI250's and a WW case. Seated them at 2.900 OAL, and they were ACCURATE! Those were shot out of my buddies dead stock 300WSM Model 70 EW. Speeds range into the 3125 range. He shot three groups at 400. 2 groups were under 2" and the last one was two shots to finalize the zero, they were 1/2" apart. I apologize for no pictures, but we were shooting in a good old Va rain storm... Dry shooting position, but the targets got pretty wet.

Gotta say, I haven't ever shot 165's outta my 300WSM, but I think I am going to try this load. If they shoot nearly as good as my buddies rifle did, I might be inclined to keep it. Recoil was nice in the lighter EW as well.

Hybrid was also another great powder with 165's. As was IMR4350. The 300WSM doesn't seem to be too tough to make accurate loads for.

7828 will work fine, if your rifle likes it. Mine didn't like it or RL22 real well. But it thrives off RL19 and RL17.
 
Wow that's impressive might have to try the RL19. I do have a pile of 180gr Accubonds, but I would like to try out some Barnes TTSX 165.
 
Yes, I've shot H100V with the 300WSM. It can be a fine powder with the 165/168 pills.

Hybrid 100 V is not a good choice for any load that you are going to compress much. I have run it in my .257 Roberts with the 110 bullet and the load is max and can be pushed into a slight compressed load. However, Hybrid 100 V is a spherical/ball powder and in the WSM case will not compress without causing problems with all WSM cases. Even with the Roberts/Mauser case, which is more forgiving, I could not get much compression without chambering problems.
 
I've compressed loads until the cases bulged, and until that point, I've never had any problems with compressed loads.
 
How long of a drop tube do you need for it to be worthwhile? I see rcbs sells a 4" drop tube/funnel kit. And then I see they sell 24" aluminum drop tubes. Seems like something I could fashion myself
 
My own experience with the .300 WSM was mostly with 165 Partitions and IMR 4350. I was able, in my rifle, to work up to 69.0 grains, with some compression as the 165 PT is not a very long bullet. My rifle is a Browning Medallion A-Bolt which my son is using now because he lives in Wyoming and I don't! Accuracy was <MOA to 300 yards, velocity about 3150 fps.

My drop tube is about 4 inches long. You can get them in different lengths.
 
My drop tube is 4" as well. Works great. I have the set made by Frankford Arsenal. Pretty inexpensive and pretty handy too.

This is the one I'm currently using as well. I have a few others around that I've acquired over the years.
 
Dunno who made them or even where I got/found them but I have two airly smll aluminum funnels with spouts that will almost slide into the neck of a .22 Hornet case. One was left alone and the other I slipped a standard soda straw from McDonald' onto the tip and use it as a drop tube. Works just fine even with the log type powders such as 4831. Before that I took two standard reloading funnels, cut the spout off one and used a 6" piece of PVC pipe to connect the two. Worked just fine. It's a bit faster to use that the soda straw set up but feels a tad bulky. When you live in a small Nevada cow town and almost everything comes by mail order and you need it now, you improvise. :lol:

I also have an MTM drop tube. However, the set from Frankfort Arsenal that Scotty shows is the one that I use most frequently. It is well-designed and doesn't bridge powders as badly as some other designs.
