300 WSM Compressed Loads

How accurate is the software you guys are using? I have a pound of Reloder 17coming and would like to work up a load with 180 accubonds, CCI 250 primers. I can seat up to 2.9"- can anyone give advice on a starting point and where to work up to?

This should give you a decent starting point. My rifle took a few grains over this to get into 3000FPS, but I am not sure of your rifles chamber.

I got mine in June of 2012, so I am not sure of the exact version. Didn't tweak anything that I know of.

Maybe Mike will know why there is a difference.

...maybe this is why you guys don't like RL-17, I'm using Alliant's data for the .25 WSSM, .300 & .325 WSM, near max loads, no pressure signs/ very good accuracy/ velocity...

Alliant lists a load with 66 grains so Steve's numbers must be right? What is everyone's personal experience? I don't have my distance to lands measurement handy, but am shooting a Sako A7 if that helps

There were adjustments in burn rates listed as data was updated. Also, I note that the data steve4102 lists does not give useable case capacity. My measured case capacity on my rifle is considerably larger than what you list, Scotty, which allows for a higher charge without pressure signs. I suspect similar differentials exists between your data and Steve's. Note the difference in burn rates listed at the bottom of each set of data. While the changes appear minor, they are actually rather significant.

Steve's Data Set:

Data for burning rate decreased by 10% relative to nominal value: -Ba 93 63.00 2869 3290 53123 10575 99.2 1.222

The latest data set was released 20 December 2012.

Thank you Mike. Clears it up. I will spring for the update after the New Year I believe, but even still, it works pretty well for generic runs. Until you get a usable case capacity for the individual rifle, its a shotgun blast where the data will run. With the case capacity, it usually tightens up the data a little more.

Also, I note that the data steve4102 lists does not give useable case capacity.

Yeah, why is that? I have the case capacity and usable case capacity on my main page, but when I punch up the data page it is not listed like others I've seen.

Any Idea how I can tweak QL to add this to my data page?

There should be another update toward the end of the year. I continue looking on the Neconos website to see if they have listed anything for an update.

I gotta say I'm more confused now than before. Alliant lists a load at 66; both quickloads say dangerous do not use. I'm not sure where to start and stop. Maybe I'll email Alliant

You are missing one important part of Alliant's on-line data. That is they list only the Max load. They also instruct the handloader to reduce this published Max load by 10% to Start.

So you really do have a "Starting point" of about 60gr and a "Published" max of 66gr. The 66gr is not your max, it is Alliant's Max, you should work up from 60+gr to find your max.

I agree.. You might find some magic in there as well.

Maximum published loads are pressure tested and verified for the system in which they are developed. That is why you always start low (usually 10%) and work up to a safe maximum in your fire system.

Max. loads today are lawyerized for lawsuit avoidance and often do not represent the max load at all. You need to use a chronograph and watch carefully for pressure signs to find your maximum loads!

Nosler #4 for instance is much higher than #7 for listed max loads.

Well now I have 2 pounds of powder without good load data (RL 17 and H4350) and I don't know if I have the experience you guys have to work up a good load... I don't have a chronograph. I have seen a lot of people post 64 grains of H4350 with 180 ABs but that seems to butt right up against the 65K SAAMI max PSI, and I don't feel too good about making loads off of data from (other) internet forums.

So, I planned on working up the following with H4350 60,61,62,63; does that seem reasonable?

Another question - the online Nosler 7 manual lists 64 gr Hybrid H100V as MAX load - Hogdon lists this as 58,900 PSI, well below max SAAMI. Is it a max load simply from case volume?

Nosler lists H110V as a maximum load because it approximates maximum pressure. Pressure spikes pretty dramatically as charge is increased with this powder.

I thought max PSI for the 300 WSM was 65K. How big of a difference would 2.9" seating depth make? And what primer is QuickLoad assuming? I am using CCI 250. Thanks.

QL makes no assumption on primer. My recommendation is to use the coolest primer to still give ignition. I do use a lot of CCI250 primers in my WSMs, though I tend to use LR primers for the most part except in extremely cold conditions or with ball powders. Seating depth can alter pressure, but not as much as you might expect. Moreover, note the velocities relative to the pressures and you'll see that as you near maximum, velocity does not increase as much as you might anticipate.
