.300 WSM….Is it a Dead Cartridge Commercially?

Dead as in available ammo or commercial chambered firearms? Some people don't want to be short and fat;) and would rather be tall and lean. It's a great cartridge for an in between 308win and super magnums. 300wsm is going to be my (or 1 of my next) ar or switch barrel cartridges. Looking at having some fun with starting with (if I can find correctly headstamped brass) of the 6.5, 270 (maybe 6.8w), 7 and 300 wsm brass. I don't care to anneal to fit what's lacking brass. Kinda want to do the same thing with long action magnums. I don't mind resetting optic dials. Either Tikka or Sako have a switch barrel where the optic stays with the barrel on changes that seems promising.

I had no problem whatsoever finding a Savage 10 in .300 WSM. It was very reasonably priced, and has a 24 in barrel. I’m just having a slight problem finding ammo for it now, is all.
Nice gun Hawk. Scoop up some brass and dies and you'll be good to go. It's an easy cartridge to work with and get to shoot well, just make sure to full length size them because of the sharp shoulder and minimum body taper.

I have pretty good resources. What are you looking for? Perhaps I can help

I can attest to that and don't worry about the FL sizing.
Having so many different platforms I always fl sized the brass.
I have brass from Winchester, Remington, Nosler, nickel plated from Olin, ...

Case life? Well I haven't retired any brass yet. Some are at double digit firings and I have lost count on some. Shame on me but...No splits, no loose pockets. I run some damn hot loads and no matter. Still in very safe serviceable condition.
That's another reason to me that makes it the greatest cartridge ever made.

Short action
Exceptional brass life...especially considering the cartridges around it's performance level
Its a 30 caliber
180 gr bullet approaching 3100 fps
Its not picky and just very accurate in a huge range of recipes

I believe had this round come out in the 50's we'd know it as the 7.62x53 and pretty much the std military round to present day.

The Super 300 WSM video mentioned from the Vortex YouTube channel. I enjoy watching to Ryan and Mark quite a bit.

Thank you Gerry! Very sound advice.

I’m looking for Federal, Remington, or Winchester 180 gr ammo. I prefer the Winchester brass.
While I prefer the 180 gr AccuBond ammo (Nosler factory at 2960 fps producing 0.630" groups, and handloads at 2978 fps producing 0.442" groups) in my 300 WSM (on wolf, black bear, moose and elk), I have also been happy with both the accuracy and on-game performance (moose and elk) of the Winchester 180 gr Power Point ammo (2970 fps producing 0.750" groups) too!

Let me see what I can find for you

I've been very busy shooting the last three days...haven't been online in a while.
Apologies. .

Let me take a look

More manufacturers are now making 300 WSM Brass than ever before! Midway currently has 7 Different Brands of Brass on their site, 4 of those are in stock too. Plus 23 different brands and types of ammunition in stock.

Hardly dead IMO, and now there’s more than a few that make truly great brass.

Now that’s a different story for the gun manufacturing companies. People are fickle, plus the options, endless SKU’s are costly to produce. What doesn’t sell, hurts their margins, and then what if each year something new has to be added? Harder to sell than marbles if there’s not enough volume.

It’s a good cartridge in any of the calibers going down town Julie Brown or uptown IMO. Especially if they’re throated correctly for the bullet used.

I've said this before and will say it again.
The shooting, hunting and outdoor trade market is by far the most trendy driven industry in the hobby and extracurricular segment. Without question far and away number one.

Think about this...this is a two part ordeal...
From approximately the 50/60's to the new millennium very little had changed. Caliber types, ammo types, even packaging saw minor alterations over half a century.
The 80's seen some funky shotshell loads like Remington duplex...but that wasn't really earth shattering.

Then...oh then...in a short window of a couple years we got to see the 17 HMR, 17 mach2, the Winchester Short Mags, Remimgton Ultra mags(short and long) the WSSM's, the .460 and 500 S&W,
every Tom, Dick and Harry started making 1911's and AR-15's, and ammo.
Corbon, Blackhills, anything black, magsafe, mag tech, mag, mag, mag,
A million scope sku's...
A million new bases and rings with QD capabilities

Powders that shoot in a blizzard. How did we ever shoot IMR4350 before when the weather was bad...🙄🙄

Moons ago people relied on the gun rags. Shooting Times, Guns and Ammo, etc...

In the middle 90's it was the internet.

So now the industry is as trendy as ever but it's in and out much quicker now.

So the WSM got a little pause because now it's creedmoor everything.

I might be the only person that refuses to join the Creedmoor train.

The WSM is the best non extreme magnum to ever come out.
Not picky with powder. Inherently stiffer action, velocities that can exceed it's taller brother the original 300 win mag.
More accurate. Longer case life.

But....
Trendiness rules the day so for now it's creedmoor, prc, arc, xyz, 1,2, 3...whatever....
The 300 wsm is fantastic and not going anywhere in the near future. All sorts of ammo available for it now... Word to the wise. Norma also is making factory ammo with several different loads and just straight up brass...

yes sir and this company ....

which seems like really well made brass..

A few years ago I'd say yes it's dead, but right now is the good old days for the 300 wsm as far as brass goes. Factory ammo, couldn't tell you

Just as things are trendy in our industry they also often times do a merry go round.

When USRAC shut down, FN took over but they were only doing top shelf rifles.
It was Browning and expensive FN and Kimber stuff.

The big killer was when metallic materials got hard to acquire.

Early on brass could be obtained from Olin and Remington.

When that disappeared it became a huge problem for the WSM.
Lapua and Nosler brass don't drive the industry.
It's the cheaper brass like Olin, Hornady and Remimgton.

Low material supply and the secondary cartridges suffer.
The mfg's make old staples and whatever is trendy. Thus..
5.56/223, 243, 308, 30-06, 300WM, ..and the trendy Creedmoor.
(WSM Was once the trendy cartridge like Creedmoor of today ...
Everyone chambered the 300WSM. )

That became the focus when material ran dry...5.56/223, 243, 308, 30-06, 300WM, ..and the Creedmoor.

Things are slowly but surely coming back around to normal.

Primers are slowly coming back down.
Availability is much better just over the past year it has improved a lot.

🤞are crossed
