Buddy of mine stumbled across a Howa 1500 for a steal. Never loaded for the 300 WSM, any starting points appreciated.

The 300 WSM really isn't fussy. You can use about any medium burn rifle powder and get sterling results. Surprisingly, when I was doing lots of work right after the 300 WSM was introduced, I found that a good charge of IMR4350 and a Hornady 180 grain SP produced good accuracy in almost every rifle I ever tested. I worked up loads in a couple of score rifles, and this load proved accurate across the platforms presented.

I have found the .300WSM very, very easy to load for. My favorite powder to date is RL17 but I must admit I haven't tried a lot of different ones.

I stumbled onto a couple of great loads right out of the blocks and had little reason to experiment. My favorite is an Alliant max charge of 17 behind a 150gr AB. 3300fps and some change that puts 5 into a ragged hole.

I've now tried that load in my Nosler, a Tikka, and 2 Brownings and the results are pretty much the same.

Brass is very hard to come by. If you buy federal ammo hoping to shoot yourself into having brass it's loaded so hot it will pretty much be shot after the virgin firing....just saying....get your hands on a good supply as soon as possible.

I bought a Vanguard (same rifle) in 300 WSM recently. The first consideration is what brass to buy as noted above, and given the limited sources I chose Nosler. So, pick up some blemished or overrun brass from SPS as a place to start.

In addition, I bought a box each of the 180gr AB and E-tips from SPS as a trial. My rifle shot the AB's quite a bit better, so I will plan on loading those eventually. The nice benefit is that I'm also going to have more brass for reloading once I'm done shooting the ammo I bought - and yes, that's part of why I bought it. Cabelas actually had some on sale for less than SPS prices, so I bought 2 more boxes to use.

Just a thought since you're starting from scratch.

Best load I've used was "borrowed" from a serious 1,000 yard benchrest competitor:

210 gr Berger VLD
H4350
Norma Brass
Federal 215 match primer

Am getting 2810 fps with excellent accuracy.

It's a rifle I don't shoot often, but I really like having it around. Mine is a Winchester Model 70 "Coyote" and a tad on the hefty size for all-day carry in rough terrain. But dang, it shoots good... :)

I have a near max load using 165g Partitions and RL 17, very accurate and about 3200 fps in my Winchester model 70 Featherweight.

I'm a RL17 and RL26 guy. I'm loading 165-190gnome Nosler bullets. The 26 with 190 LRAB is pretty impressive.

Ya why is 300 WSM so hard to find? It's become a pretty standard caliber. I can find 300 WM brass no problem.
