i am looking at a 300 winchester short mag and i am wondering how far can they shoot out and be accurate and if they are worth it

I was asking the same question a few weeks ago when I ordered my Tikka 300WSM, I was torn between it and the win mag (you may want to scrole back a few weeks or go to longrangehunting.com). I like it so far, but I have never had a win mag either. Everyone has told me that the rifle has more to do with accuracy than the caliber - I beleive them too. Mine seems to shoot OK, I have not found a good hunting load yet, but I have a plinking load that is hitting close to half minute groups.
As far as power, they are a little smaller than the win mag (however, the 7mm WSM is bigger than the 7mm rem).
I spoke to my "mentor" and he said he never had one, but if you look at all the new big hits in the accuracy arena, they are usually shorter and fater than the ones they replaced. examples, 6mm ppc, 22ppc, 6mm br, 308, 30 br,6-284,6.5-284...I think he has a point. Generally speaking high degree sholders, and limited taper body are more efficient cartidges. Ammo is fairly expensive if you don't load your own.

ok thanks i would have to look at the dies because i reload. but thanks for the info

I dont have a 300 wsm but I do have a 270 wsm, I love the shortmag, and it out shoots my 270win everytime! In my reloading book it shows that you only lose 30 to 50 fps with the 300 wsm, no animal is going to be able to tell the difference. I dont know if its just my gun or if it applies to any other of the WSM but mine is not to picky on anything I load in it, Ive gotten good results with a number of powders and bullets.

Hi ya,
I do not own a .300 wsm but I do load for my hunting partner who happens to love his. It seems to like 180gr. bullets the best w/ 4831 & shoots very well from the bench ( .5" 3 shot groups ). I do not believe it is faster or more accurate than a .300 win. mag. but we practice a lot on his ranch setting up different scenarios w/ milk jugs out to 500 yrds. & his .300wsm does just fine. He has had it for 2 seasons now & has taken 2 black tails & a black bear w/ no problems at all.

Good Luck,
Jar Head

ok thanks. what kind is the powder? is it h4831 or imr4831 and what brand are the bullets? and what kind. thanks

matts318 one of my friends is wondering how good the 270 wsm is and how does it do in the field so far?

I have a 270WSM. It's shot squirrels, coyotes, blacktails, wild hogs and a cow elk. I load the 140AB for it. For the animals I listed, it will do great, as long as the person pulling the trigger does their job. Oh, almost forgot, I got the cow elk using 160 partitions.

Corbin I really like the 270 wsm, I took 2 deer with it this last season and both were one shot kills, one from about 175 yards, I have shot a 270 win. my whole life and the short mag is all of that but better. It could be the rifle itself but the short mag outshoots both mine and my dads 270 winchesters, and it seems to be less finicky with powders also. As far as field performance goes its been great, no complaints what so ever, the only thing I can even begine to complain about is they dont chamber as smooth as I would hope, but I can still rerack one in there quick, regardless that doesnt matter if you take a good shot at game. Would I buy another one? I sure would without hesitation!

"(however, the 7mm WSM is bigger than the 7mm rem)."

This statement is not true. The 7 WSM is not bigger, nor does it hold more powder then a 7 Rem Mag. The water capacity of the 7 WSM is about 81 grains, while the 7 RM is 84 grains.

The only WSM that outdoes the intended competition is the 270 WSM. It will beat the 270 Win by an easy 200fps with all bullet weights. The 7 WSM and 300 WSM are not bigger and certainly not faster, then the 7 RM or the 300 WM.

A properly loaded 300 WSM with a 180-190 VLD bullet will still have sufficient power to kill elk and deer to 1000 yards. Question is are you and your rifle up to the task? Magnums have the ability to kill at least 2x farther then the average guy can shoot. I would look at a heavy barreled savage or the like, work up a good load, get a LRF, dial up scope, and practice, practice, practice. If you want to shoot a designated "hunting" bullet, I would use the 180g AB or BT. That would get you to 800 yards pretty easily. If you would like to use a Berger VLD type bullet, I would use the 190g at around 2900fps and you'll be good for out to 1000 yards. Look for a laod that will give at least consistent .75" MOA and low ES numbers.

Hi Corbin,
My hunting partners .300 wsm does the best w/ IMR 4831, !80gr. Accubonds & 180gr. Sierra Gamekings

I can't argue accuracy, but can say that when I owned a 300WSM Winchester Ultimate, the accuracy was no better than my old 300WinMag. I could never attain the MV from the 300WSM that I could easily get from the 300WinMag. MV translates into flatter trajectory and more retained energy down range, so longer effective killing capacity.
With the new generation of bullets that hold together better and give controlled expansion, one can go to a lighter bullet and attain more MV. I cannot believe that there is an elk alive that could stand after being well hit by one of Noslers better bullets in 180gr. Therefore the 300WinMag is the way to go, unless a rifle a few ounces lighter is that important.
I believe that there was a race to get these short mags into the market place and they have been oversold. There is no getting away from the fact that more case capacity equals a broader choice in how hot one wants to load.
I have friends that swear by the 300Wby Mag, but I have never needed anything more than 300WinMag. Sometimes, newer does not mean "improved".

I have a Winchester 70 Classic SS in .300 WSM and truly like this rifle/cartridge combo. I will be upfront and say that I had a gunsmith do a trigger job on it becuase the factory one was lousy and I had the crown recut to 11 degrees.
The rifle likes 165 and 180 grain pills and reloader 22 is my powder. It shoots very well and accuracy is excellent at MOA at 100yds.
I bought it because the price was too good to pass up for a .300

If this deal didn't come along, I was toying with who to choose as a custom rifle builder to make me a .300 Win Mag. I do believe that a well made, properly handloaded .300 Win Mag is the perfect all around North American cartridge.
Very accurate- sniper/counter sniper round for obvious reasons
1000 yard match cartridge
Hits hard at all ranges
Sub MOA possiblities when handloaded and well built
Has the power to kill any big bear, moose, elk and buffalo you might encounter or be hunting at distances most of us can't really shoot well at!!!
Just my $.02 worth
