Decided today would be a great day to introduce a friend of mine to rifle shooting beyond 50 yards. That's all she's done, is a .22 and an AR-15 at short range. Does well, but... It was time to stretch the range a little, and also I wanted to check my .25-06 again before heading out this weekend for mule deer.
Had three rifles:
.25-06 Rem 700 CDL, 6x Leupold, 115 gr Noslers, both Partition and Ballistic Tip
5.56mm 16" Bushmaster with 1.5-4x Leupold, 55 gr PMC fmj factory ammo
.308 Win Rem 700 "Green Machine" 4.5-14x Leupold, 168 gr Nosler competition bullets over Varget
The .25-06 was dead on, as it should be. No change from Wyoming, no change from here earlier.
The .308 was of course dead on. I made three consecutive head shots on the silhouette. The first one on the far right of the head was the cold bore shot, then adjusted my hold for the slight left to right wind for the next two shots. Gratifying hits:
I was pleased that the AR-15, using the BDC built into Leupold's 1.5-4x AR scope was hitting well at 300 yards too.
My young friend tried the .308 for the first time. She'd never shot a bolt action rifle before. Had three solid hits in a row on the silhouette at 300 yards and was one happy girl. I think she's got a future as a target shooter! The she switched to the 5.56 AR-15 and found out life at 300 yards with a 4x scope isn't nearly as easy as with a heavy barreled Rem 700 and a 14x scope... Still, she worked her way through a 20 round magazine and at one point managed three hits in a row! Beat up the fresh black paint job on the target and then we called it good.
Was happy to continue her education as a shooter, and very glad that she managed to do well with both the bolt action rifle and the semi-auto AR-15 at 300 yards. It was a pretty good leap, from 50 yard shooting months ago to 300 yard shooting today. Very seldom has someone with painted nails shot my .308 Green Machine...
Was also real happy to see my .308 and my .25-06 shooting just fine, with my mule deer hunt looming in a few days...
It was a good morning at the range.
Regards, Guy
