300 zero for hunting

I'm with everyoneelse here. 200 yd zero is good. Most hunting ssituations are within 100yds to 200yds anyway.
I've always had 200yd zeros, and never had any problems connecting on game. Prairie dogs on up to elk.
Now, thanks to several scope companies, they make Bullet Drop Compensating models, and there are MIL Dot scopes that you can use to adjust bullet drop and windage change after learning how to use one.
It helps to take a lot of guess work away, but still up to the individual to practice, practice, practice!

I have this debate with myself quite often. I have use a 200 yard zero for anything that has some sort of compensating reticle like the B&C Leupold, or TMR.

Everything with a duplex gets zeroed at 250 and dialed if needed. But I practice with holdovers out to 400 as well. I find that usually the location of the duplex getting larger on the vertical line of the reticle often makes a good 400 yard hold over reference. This gives me a really quick option to make a good shot if the situation doesn't offer the time to get set up and dial turrets.

Just my $.02

My tuppenceworth is - I zero my .25-06 at 200yds. It's an easy 'holdover' for 300yds if I need to take a longer shot.
Works for me. Cheers, ET

Gentlemen

There is a much simpler way to do this.

Hunt with a 300 H & H preferably a mauser 98 or pre 64 Model 70 Winchester. Hold the gun over your head so that the game your hunting can see it. Once they see what your hunting with, they will simply lay down and die.

Best Regards

Jamila

p.s. anyone want to guess who weaned me on the 300 H & H ?

What is that saying?? What ever works for you !!
I should try that with my 35 Whelen coming up here in a month when I am on my Moose hunt with DrMike & gerry . Can you imagine the look on their face when that big bull just falls over (y)!!

Blessings,
Dan

For the last 65 years I have sighted my 30-06 in 3" high at 100, that's 4 inches high at 200 and dead on at 275 yards and a tad low at 300..I can hold center body and make a killing shot every time, well most of the time!! I also test everyone of my rifles at that range and most of them are right on those stats..This is the old Jack O'Connor sight in and it has worked for me also, its second nature. However over the last 65 or so years I have observed most shots at game have been high misses, so if you can't remember the above stats that I use under the stress of hunting or cannot judge open country ranges, you would be well off to sight in 2 inches high at 100 yards. Using a range finder is an option. I bought my first one six months ago but never remember to use it and it does slow you down with the window of opertunity presents itself..I would only use one at beyond 300 yards, and I don't normally shoot further than that, as I "mostly" can always cut that range by at least a 100 yards..

I have shot the 300 H&H for many years, but never had a deer surrender, guess I'm just unlucky.

I'd rather not have to be calculating mid-range trajectory in my head for a quick 100 to 150 yard shot. I even sight-in my long range rifle at 200 yds for this very reason. When I decide on a long shot, I'll figure the point I want to hit and then the hold over. I use a mildot scope - Have the dot count for ranging and the drop at range in a table on masking taped to the scope. Its just not that hard and doesn't take much time!
