I have a no1mk3 smle 303 i am going to use as a back up gun for a deer hunt coming up next year.I am using my brno 602 300wm as main gun.Its loaded with 220 gn partitions,I am looking for something to use in the 303 in a 170 to 180 gn projie.What do you fellas suggest?The deer i will be hunting are sambar.

I have a British SMLE Nr. 1 Mk4 in .303 but prefer the lighter bullets for deer. I get my best results with Speer 150gr. PSP pushed along by IMR4895 42grs. The Speer 180gr. RN is quite accurate also with IMR4064 40.7grs. Best wishes.

Sorry Wharf that it took awhile to reply, we are growing so fast that I can't always get time to answer web questions. Nope we don't make a .311-.312" diameter bullet yet for the 303 British. For bullet requests start a thread to see if there is a lot of interest. We're always looking for new bullets to make if we can. Thanks.

Hornady 174 RN is the same weight as the sights are set for.It's also a .312" .Slug your bore,then add two of the grooves to 303.

From memory,Enfield rifling is five equal lands and grooves.Since it's odd number you can't just measure across.Spec call for grooves of .0055" and a bore of .303",what they are might be a different story.Military sights are set for a load,so to use them some guys then try to match the load.
Most 303 rifles I have slugged range from a "small" of .3115" to a "large"of .3145" I have a P14 that slugs dead on .313" and it shoots best with the larger Hornady slug, which is .312" However, it shoots even better with a custom-made bullet from a fellow in Ontario, Canada which weighs 200 grains and is sized at .313" The suggestion of Reloder 15 is a good one, since that powder will give the best velocities at safe pressures in the 303 case with bullets from 150-180 grains. Another good one In my experience is Vihtavuori N540. For the 200 grain bullet I am using a Nobel powder just a tad faster than IMR 4350 and/or W760. Regards, Easgleye.
