I just got my 308 barrel for my encore handgun and was woundering if anybody has used this combination? If so could you guy's give me a good load ? Thanks.
My buddy loaded this bullet in a 30-30 for his daughter and she shot 2 bucks last fall. The first buck was around 225 yds and the second buck was around 100 yds. Both deer had exit wounds and they did not go far after the shot.
Take a look at Varget and IMR4895, should give you some decent velocity and accuracy.
I don't use these myself, but load for two friends that I hunt with who use them extensively.
The first uses them in a 30-06 at ~ 3200 fps, and in a BLR 308 at 3000+ fps. Deer are DRT - blood shots more meat than I care for at close impact ranges & high impact velocity, but IT WORKS. It's toes up & a flash of white belly in the air when you shoot them with these.
The other friend uses them in a 14" barreled 30-30 Contender. He was having problems with getting bullets to open up at Contender velocities. I loaded some up for him and his killed a number of deer and hogs with them. At the lower velocities out of the contender (~ 2200 fps) he has shot through both shoulders on a 200 lb hog and found the base under the skin in the off side. What was left of the core was still in the base of the bullet.
Ok - that's what I know from close up - been in on the dragging out & cleaning of most of the animals referenced above.
I would suggest Varget - I worked up to the maximum charge listed in Hodgdon's No. 27 manual for the 130 gr bullet weight in a 30-30 while sizing the brass fired in his Contender to have minimum shoulder setback that would cleanly close in his pistol.
He has been very pleased and is still using it in his Contender pistol, my experience, FWIW.
