.308 165 NP VS Elk

Picked up the meat last night so it's tenderloin night and Maker's Mark tonight. The rifle is a Remington Ti in a McMillan Edge. It is a joy to carry and not bad to shoot. 3 weeks and I go again with my son on his first.

Lovely pictures, of a very nice bull. Like most here I am choosey about my elk, I typically wait until I see the first legal animal then shoot it if possible.

Sounds eminently sensible, Bill. I'm sure that shoot-and-release is frowned upon in most jurisdictions.

Hunt,
Congrats on the meat and thanks for the pic. Being from NM, I miss the way lichen covers tufa rock like that up North. There's nothing like getting above it all, glassing from up high, making the stalk, and pulling off the shot. Looks like home sweet home to me! By the way nice rifle and great photography. Good luck with the kiddo in November!
Joe

Thanks Joe EOD! I was weapons in the Air Force, be careful playing with them hung bombs! Northern NM is amazing for sure! The kiddo at the range yesterday was ringing the 200 yard plates so looks like another freezer may be needed :)

Congrats on a fine young bull. I will say it will be very tasty indeed. I told my kids when I came back with a spike buck and a doe when they asked "where are the antlers dad" I said that you will wreck all your teeth trying to eat the antlers, meat is easier to chew. I to love my 30-06 and 180gr NP's, they really do the trick time after time. Great shooting!

Looking forward to your November hunting report with your son. Will he be shooting that same 30-06 and load?
Joe

No, he is shooting a .308 and 125 NAB around 3100 FPS. Full report to come if I can get him on one. Thanks for the encouragement.
