.308 twist rates

I am rebarreling a 308 and normally shoot 165 partitions with occasional 150s. Average shot between 125 and 225 yards. What twist rate would perform the best for this.

John L. - I'm not sure this is in the right spot on the forum, but if not a moderator will likely move it for us.

The .308's a great cartridge, and a 1:12 twist is perfect for 150 - 165 grain bullets! Push comes to shove, it will likely handle the 180's as well. There's a lot of flexibility in the .308 Win. My current barrel is a 1:12 Krieger, it shoots 110 gr varminters - 168's very well. Now and again I've shot some 180's through it, with no problems.

When I wear out this .308 Win barrel, it will be replaced by another 1:12 twist.

Regards, Guy

Thanks,

Savage uses a 1-10, Sako a 1-11 and Browning a 1-12 and Shilen recommends 1-12 for the 165 grains. I have used all of these and all shot well with bullets in the 150-165 range. However, all of these use a much faster twist for a 140 grain 7-08 and I was unsure as to weather I shoud go with the upper or lower end of the twist range in the 308.
1-12 appears to be the most popular choice.

I am almost certain my .308win is a 1-12, T/C Encore, 24" barrel.

So far it likes 165 and 180 grains the best, though with certain loads in 150 it will do o.k.

11 or 12 twist are best suited for 308 Winchester. You can shoot bullet from 110 grains on up to 175 grain or even 180. With 7MM however, the standard twist is 9. This is because when comparing the two bullet even though they have the same weight, the 7MM have a much longer shank than the 308 therefore requiring faster twist.

John,

The 12" twist is a standard for the .308 Win, and all of my rifles have used that twist. I shoot 180s quite a bit hunting, and you can even use some 200s if you have a wild hair.

The larger cased .30 cal cartridges use the 10" twist, a holdover from the days of the 220 gr .308" bullet.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I have decided to go with a 1-12 as I will not be shooting anything heavier than 165 in this rifle. For anything heavier, a different rifle will be used.
