Does anyone have a recipe for this combination? I am looking for an accurate load for my Model Seven XCR, to use on NC whitetails. Thanks in advance! Jazzball

My model 7 shot the 150 bt the best with 47 grains Varget. This is max load according to my manual. With that short barrel, the 150 is a good choice if looking for half way decent velocity. Mine was the older model with 18.5" barrel and shnabel forend walnut stock.

Yes, my standard .308 Win target load, which has served me well for years, is:

46.5 gr Varget
155 Nosler competition bullet
Fed 210m primer
Winchester cases

Good results downrange from several different barrels. It's getting close to a max load, so I'd recommend working up to it.

For grins I've loaded the same but with a 150 grain hunting bullet and have been pleased with the accuracy & velocity.

Regards, Guy

I ran a ladder test from 44 to 48 grains and got the best accuracy at 45g using Lapua brass and Fed 210M primers 30/1000 from the lands.

I'm not anxious to speed up my hunting loads with the BT since this bullet just doesn't need the velocity to perform. Also, my gun, brass and barrel last longer when I don't push it to the limit.

Good point about the Ballistic Tip opening up and working well at less than max velocity. It's a great bullet!

Just for info here's a couple of MAX level loads I looked up:

Nosler: 150, 48.5 Varget = 3001 fps

Hodgdon: 150, 47.0 Varget = 2937 fps, 50300 CUP

Might be worthwhile knowing where the experts draw the line at cramming more Varget into the .308 case. Interesting that there's a 1.5 gr difference between Nosler's max data and Hodgdon's max data. My Sierra data from an earlier manual is far more conservative.

I believe this stems from some inconsistencies from one lot of Varget compared to the next.

Although I haven't seen a problem myself - my Varget loads have been very consistent, lot to lot, over the years - I do get around it by buying the stuff in 8 lb jugs. When I start in on a new jug of powder, I start my load workup again, instead of just loading up my old favorite and hoping for the best.

Does anybody shoot this combination in a Model Seven? I've used the 150 NBT for years, and now that I am reloading, I am having trouble finding an accurate load. I know the rifle needs bedding, but I am still hoping to get 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards. Thanks

I've not worked up loads for the M7 in 308, but I have in 260. Generally that gun has a thin barrel so you need to give it plenty of time between shots to let the barrel cool.

I'd also bring the charge down to the 44 to 45 grain level with Varget to minimize the barrel vibration. You can also mess with seating depth, but I'd suggest optimizing the charge weight 1st.

You should be able to get an M7 to shoot at 1.5 inches. Don't give up, my M7 is one of my favorite guns.

I have found 44.5 grains works well with the 150 grain BT, Hornady Match cases and CCI LR primers in my T/C Encore. This load also works great in my friends Rem 700 and Nosler Custom cases.

I have the Model 600 in 308-short and thin barrel.
It is finicky and likes 49 or 50 grains of W760, then it give some
groups around .5" with the B-tip or AccuBond. Otherwise i get
1.5" or larger with other powder like varget or reloder 15 that should
be good. My Dad liked 4320 for the rifle, but I haven't tried that yet.

Sounds typical of the model 7, at least the one i had. I loved it because it was short and light for hunting in the mountains, but I was never happy with either the group or the speed. I so much wanted it to work. Ok am I talking about guns or women? I cant remember :p
