FINALLY had the time to do reloads for my Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06AI on saturday night. Here is a pic. 2-225gr Accubonds and a TTSX in the middle.

Link to pics of my rifle project (page 4): http://www.noslerreloading.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7871&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Reloaded total 40 rounds (35 -225gr Accubonds and 5-225gr TTSX's *Sorry Nosler guys just did it for the hell of it, Accubonds are my bullet of choice for all my other calibers  ) using 58.5gr of H414 (medium hot load), Federal 210 primers and new Weatherby 338-06 A-square brass. Plan is to fire-form the brass and break-in rifle barrel. Then after get into the load development.

OAL avg is 3.306" for both the 225gr Accubonds and TTSX's reloads. The magazine max. is 3.380, so it leaves a liitle room for feeding. If I remember from the reload manual, max length is 3.440". Once I fire-form the brass, I'll measure my actual rifle allowable COAL.

Plan is hopefully goto the range tommorrow. I'll post results later. Just remember-this is rifle barrel break-in and brass fire-forming...so I'm not expecting great groupings off the start, but who nows..maybe I'll get lucky.

JD338, just curious as to your 338-06AI rifle, what is your COAL, and what did you sight in at later? I'm planning after to be 2" High @ 100 metres (110 yards).

Also, would Federal 215 Magnum primers be better for me with our temperature range during hunting season in Alberta. I have other powders to use during load development as I did searches and other responses, saying RL-15, 4064 are good choices. I have a few lbs. of WS 780 too I may try, along with Varget, H380, 4850SSC, 4350.

All input is greatly appreciated.

Later all.

Mighty Peace

That is very nice. I don't have a 338-06 AI, I do have a 338 RUM and 280 AI. I would run the bullet out to .020" off the lands or as long as the magazine will allow.

Once you load up some fire formed cases, post another picture of a loaded round so we can see what a cool round you have. 8)

Mighty Peace,

Scookum round. Those just look awesome. It'll be interesting to see your results after break-in.

Thanks POP for the info.

Hopefully I can make it to the range this afternoon if work is slow enough to slip away and take the afternoon off. If not, for sure this weekend.

Definately will post some new pics of the fire-formed brass with reloads.

POP,

The Peace Region of Canada begins in northwestern British Columbia and extends through northeastern Alberta. It is the prairie land surrounding the Peace River, and area of approximately 150,000 square miles. It includes incorporated major cities in British Columbia of Fort Saint John, Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge and Pouce Coupe. In Alberta, it includes Grande Prairie, Peace River and Fairview. It is a hunters paradise, and the fishing ain't bad either. It is composed of good people who work hard and produce tremendous amounts of oil and gas, which the United States depends on. More recently, coal has become a major product of the region. The region is a major producer of Canola and hard winter wheat for pasta, in addition to oats and peas. This region is a major producer of oriented strand board and pulp from the extensive lumbering that takes place here. All-in-all, it is a great place to live and filled with good people.

Good explaination Dr.Mike except its the northeastern BC and northwest portion of Alberta...

But you are correct...its a hunters paradise. Where else can you go and hunt trophy whitetail, mulies, bears, hunt elk, moose, coyotes and wolves, upland and migritory birds pretty much in our back yards. If I lived by the inlaw's farm, pretty much hunt right off your back porch for them all. Some farmland I hunt is only maybe a 5 minute drive from town. Majority of my hunting is close to the farm which is about 35km from town. Close to the river valley.

For me, I get into the heavy bush-crown land for my annual moose hunting trip with my buddies- but its only an hour's drive to camp. Been going into the same camp spot for 18 years...except for one year (2001) where we went do a different area way north but still in the WMU we hunt in.

If you Nosler fellows or anyone else reading this post ever want to come up and hunt the Peace River area, let me know as my brother-in-law is an outfitter and I'll PM you info. Maybe I can TRY to get time off to guide you myself-if not I'd definately come out and meet you. I use to guide, taking all of November off and sometimes a couple weeks in September for archery season, but with the position I have now with work for the past 5 years, its hard to take the time off like that anymore.

OK, next posting will be initial range results.

MP,

I'm dyslexic <grin> and directionally challenged. What else can I say? Compass and GPS are merely suggestions for me, according to my hunting partners. As the old saying goes, I've never really been lost, but I have overnighted a time or two while the world revolved to right itself.

Hunting around Dawson Creek is within a few kilometres of my house, and virtually throughout the entire region, right over to the Rockies and all the way up the Alaska Highway. My favourite hunting spot for the past several years is a large farm bordering a massive community pasture which is about 50 miles from the Rockies. There are moose, elk, grizzly, black bears, mule deer, white tails, partridge, blue grouse, ruffed grouse, sharptail grouse, wolves, coyotes, ducks and geese within a brisk walk of the house. There are always mountain areas within an hours' drive that allow hunting big horn sheep and mountain goats, and within two hours are caribou and dall sheep.

Yes you are lucky for hunting that cloes for sheep....especially bighorn and dall....I'm sooo jealous

Only way to hunt a dall sheep for me will be to win a draw ticket trip.

The hunting in AB is not too shabby. You have some of the finest deer, both mule deer and white tails, in North America. Black bears near you aren't too shabby, either. You also have antelope in southern Alberta, which would be a hoot to hunt.

Down around Grande Cache and Cadomin are some fine areas for hunting sheep and goats, as I recall. I lived in Jasper for a few years, and it was torture to see the abundance of game, knowing it was off limits. That trip between Hinton and Grande Prairie always reveal lots of game. I see plenty of the locals in that area during the season.

Cool....I no longer feel geographically challenged! :p

The 338-06 is a great cartridge, and the AI version should be better still. I hunt with a friend that uses a 338-06, and it does a great job on all that he has shot so far.

Pop, I'd love to show you around this region if you are ever up this way. I know that every region of North America has its charm, and I have lived right across the USA and Canada, but I have to believe that this Peace Region is hunters heaven.

Well I finally made two outing to the range withthe last trip yesterday. Fireformig/breaking in new barrel with 225gr Accubonds. My 270WSM Tikka T3 LS has more felt recoil than my Sako m75 GReywolf 338-06AI.

Best 3 shot grouping is under 1" with 2 shots touching-maybe I pulled the 3rd. This happen twice. Largest is under 2"-but hey-ITS a NEW Barrel.

Anyhow very impressed-now to see how reloaded fireformed brass does and start developing loads. Being doing more research and lots of people use either the RL15 or 4064 for their 338-06 and Ackley models. Used H414 at 58.5gr for a medium/hot load to fireform at OAL of 3.340 (Nolser #6 for 338-06AS). Now to check out my COAL and measure my clip and see what I get.

JD338, I'll post pics of new loaded AI version ammo when I get some doen up-hoefully soon. Plan is to initiate the rifle on a large Alberta spring black bear-hopefully a colored one

Sweet! you're there. A nice hammer under MOA..... Great!

Its Better

It is a 338-06 (same thing as 338-06AS)but in the Akley Improved version. 40 degree shoulder-therefore should be more powder, more velocty and better brass life.

I did it also to be diferent. :p
