338-06 VS 35-06 aka 35 Whelen

Yes they are pistol bullets, I don't know of any rifle bullets in .35 that are 180gr unless they would be for the older black powder rounds. They also make 200gr pistol bullets or you can cast them which also creates more flexibility.
I'm thinking a 4 or 5 grove barrel would work great with cast bullets.

Out of curiosity, why a 4- or 5-groove for pistol bullets?

Sorry if I was miss understood on the number of grooves. I was pertaining to the stress on the bullets as they enter the rifling, I was told the three groove rifling was intended for small caliber bullets .17-.244, 4-5 groove up to .40 and 6 groove for .40 and above. I've been told that the 5 groove is a Winchester design. Supposedly the less stress you put on the bullet as it engraves the rifling the less fouling you'll have and a more accurate barrel. At least this is what I have read how true it is I don't know because I'm not a Ballistics engineer( boy this is getting deep I may be driving a train next  ).

Well, I'm also no engineer, but I can't help but wonder if the fewer grooves as caliber decreases weren't more a function of the smaller bore making it more complicated to squeeze in more grooves? I really don't know, just hypothesizing.

My Whelen was done with 3 grooves. I talked to Jess at JES Reboring at length about this, and his nearly exact words were "I do all my own stuff with 3 grooves. I only offer 4 and 5 groove options because some customers demand it."

My Whelen has a 1 in 12 twist so can handle any bullet made which is nice, the Benchmark tube has 6 grooves FWIW. From what I understand the 1 in 16 is supposed to be a bit more friendly to pistol bullets than a faster twist, living in Canada .357 cal bullets aren't that easy to get at least here where there are lots of 9mm bullets but no .357, would still like to try it one day. I have always liked the 9.3x62 so may get one some day, it is a world class round.

Actually the 1-14 is apposed to be the prime twist for 358 pistol bullets. There was several articles written about taking a colt Python barrel and fitting it to a S&W frame for which the called them a Smolt. S&W barrels were 1-16 and the Colt was 1-14.
