338/375R build starts today!!!!

Very nice Jake.
Get some glass on it and take her for a test drive.

I'd imagine some of your other rifles crowd to the back of your safe when you put that one in! Too bad there isn't any maneating broccoli running around the farm that needs to be put down

Love your webbing choice with the stainless; that looks sharp!

You better not go blowing holes in the 300 yard gong with that howitzer!

Maybe I missed it but what barrel did you go with, a Benchmark again?

It is a fluted #4 Benchmark. I went with 5R rifling this time. I have used only three grooves before and wanted to try something new. I only have three rounds down it so far. I'll give it five ir six more before making much of a comparison. The three grooves always amazed me as to how fast they cleaned up. This one seems to be taking a bit more effort. But it's still early.

My 35 Whelen is a #4 Benchmark that has 6 grooves in it it seems to clean up pretty quick but then again I don't have a 3 groove like yours to compare it to. What are the advantages and downsides to going with a 3 groove over a 5 or 6?

In theory, reducing the number of grooves while keeping the ratio of land to groove width the same, there is more land area to resist heat erosion. The three groove are also reported to foul less and clean up ore quickly. This is especially true in smaller calibre rifles.

Nice looking rifle Jake!!! Looks like it came together very nice, I like it!!

Im thinking the brake on the 8lb rifle is a great idea myself!! LOL

We need to get together and do some steel slapping here soon too.

That looks awesome Jake. I bet it's going to be really impressive! Came together really fast too!

I'm betting you'll be right on 340 ballistics, which is right where I'd think would be awesome, especially for a rifle at that weight.

What scope/mounts are you putting on it Jake?

I sent my VX-III 4.5-14x40 LR to Leupold last week to have some turrets put on it. As for bases, I have a buddy with some spare dovetail bases. I already have rings siting on my bench.

I hope to get it out and put it on paper, and over the chrony this weekend. I think I'll do ladder tests with 7828SSC, RL-22, H1000, and Ramshot Magnum. That sould get me some base load data.

Sounds pretty sweet! If I get around to building one I'd likely try a VX6 and shoot for about 9.25 lbs ready to go.

Love the webbing J. How far away were you when you applied it?

A few feet. It looked like a bunch of Spider webs or silly string floating in the air as it hit the stock. It ws really neat to watch.

Don't forget about RL19 Jake. It looks very good with 225's and 250's. Plus, it always seems very accurate.
