Anyone have a 338-378 WBY??? I'm tossing around the idea of getting one in the Accumark model. I'm also considering the mighty 338 RUM. Give me your opinions.

I don't have the 338-378 Wby but I do have a 338 RUM. The killing power of the 338 RUM is truely impressive. Mule deer, WT deer, Elk and Blk Bear have all fallen to a single shot, dropping them in their tracks.
If you want more than the 338 RUM, you can go with the 338 Edge, which is a 338-300 RUM. You will have more options for a rifle action, Rem, Win or Savage.
The 338-378 Wby is truely an awesome round and a long range hammer. The Wby will not fit in most actions and brass is also more expensive.
A friend of mine has the Mark V Accumark and shoots sub MOA with 250 gr PT's. Its a very nice rifle.

Hope this helps.

JD338, I did check out the 338 Edge. Mighty impressive, but he sure is proud of his work, $2000+ just to get the base model. OUCH

I would really start thinking very seriously if Nosler make a 338cal 250AB. The thoughts of the above rifles with this bullet............!

You can do a 338 Edge for a lot less money. A standard 338 RUM and have a good smith rechamber for a 338-300RUM. Same cartridge.

I agree, a 250 gr AB would be perfect for the 338 Mags. Give Kyle Hopp at Nosler a call and discuss it with him. 800 285 3701.

Did you get some 225 gr AB seconds?

I would go with the standard 338 RUM, and then later, you can rechamber to 338/300 with a 28" bbl and shoot the 300g SMK at around 2900fps. Thats plenty of power in a packable rifle.

The weatherby is pretty limited and not to mention expensive. The extra 100fps is not worth the cost, IMO.

You can have the 338 EDGE rebareled for about $1200, if you already have the action. My dad is taking his 300 RUM up to Shawn in 2 weeks to get the process started. He is going to go with a 28" hart fluted w/brake, get the rem 700 action trued up, pillar bed the stock and we'll be on our way to a legitamate 1500 yard rifle. Cant wait!!!

I think for 95% of hunting shots, these rifles have more power then you need. They are for a specialized purpose and thats knocking things off on the other canyon side, or couple canyons over. I think any shooting with these type rifles under 500 yards is a waste. You dont need a RUM or 378 based case to make a 500-600 yard shot on elk, regular magnums take care of that easily, IMO.

Recently had the same choice to make - a .338 Mag for large game. I went with the .338/378 Wby in the MkV Synthetic stocked version.

Had to opportunity to shoot one and compare with a couple of the other .338's that friends own and was really impressed with the difference the Accubrake makes. Felt recoil is close to what I feel with my Winchester 70 in 7mm Rem Mag.

Picked up a couple of boxes of the Nosler/Win CT Failsafes 230gr which I hope will shoot well through the rifle. Has anyone had experience with this bullet or Failsafes in general, I have never used them before?

HiWall, have been using the 230 gr. Failsafe for quite a while. When the went out of production I picked up 6 extra boxes. Should keep me in stock for a hunting-only load for a long time. My research into the Failsafe stated that loads should be worked up slowly due to the increased pressures that that particular bullet can cause due to the steel base cup.

I load RL22 to less than the maximum the Nosler manual states, but get real good accuracy, and that's what I look for...

Damn, I hadn't realised the CT Failsafe had gone out of production, I was aware of the Partition Gold not being available as I used to use it in my 7 Mag before the supply dried up.

If I nail down a good shooting load with the Failsafe I will definately need to cruise the gunshops and buy as many as I can.

Is the AccuBond supposed to replace both the Partition Gold and the Failsafe range?

In all honesty, the failsafe was replaced because the bullet plain sucks. Its like a barnes X. They have a few followers, but for every 1 guy who likes them, there were 10 who hated them. More people had problems with accuracy and expansion, and not to mention they were an expensive bullet to produce.

I'm not sure why the PT gold line was dropped.
