Does anyone know the OAL of the 250 grain 338 AccuBond?

While we are on it :), do you also know the length and final diameter of the boat tail on that bullet?

Thanks in advance, I am machining some sabots and need the dimensions.

338 Cal 250gn AB is: 1.570"
The boattail length is .150" (kind of hard to measure)
and the final diameter of the boattail is: .295"

That's about as good as I can get with just a set of calipers.

Boy that was fast!

Thanks a lot for the info, I have ordered the bullets and would like to machine some sabots for them before they get here.

Thanks again :)

Single guy, off for the week and it's crappy weather. So, it's internet, reloading, and TV time.

Are the sabots for shooting the 338/250AB out of a muzzle loader?

Yes. I have mainly been shooting the 150 NAB .308 but want to extend my range a bit. With a reported 0.575 BC and a MV around 3000 fps I figure that it should be an 800+ yd ML....limited by the minimum 1800fps Nosler low end.

edge,

I just broached the same question to Nosler, 50 cal sabot for 338 cal and 375 cal.
If you are able to machine a few extra sabots, I would be happy to try some out and report back. I will cover any cost involved.

My material is not large enough for 50 caliber. I also machine the rifling into the sabot. Mine is 1:14 since the barrel was machined from a 458 win mag barrel blank.

The 250 NAB is the longest bullet that I have tried so far but it should work....but we shall see :)

What twist do you have in your 50 caliber ML ?

edge,

I am shooting a T/C Omega 50 cal, 28" barrel with a 1:28" twist.

Currently shooting a Nosler .451 cal 260 gr PT with 120 grs 777 loose powder which is equivalent to 150 grs with 3 pellets.

I don't think that a 1:28 will stabilize any of the Accubonds that I have seen. You probably need smokeless velocities anyway. Nosler states that you need a minimum of 1800 fps at impact to ensure expansion with the Accubonds.

I'm thinking you might be right on this.

Should see just how fast you can crank that 250grn pill saboted out of a 50 BMG.......... I wouldn't have the foggiest idea of how to try that, but it would be FAST. darn hard on any Elk, Mulie, moose or Bear inside of a KM.

Edge,
Would you be willing to provide a picture of your work? Your project is interesting and I'd like to see the finished product.

These are a previous generation and what I used last year and very close to what I use this year but with minor alterations.

The black line is an index line that I use for loading. The black line groove always goes down the barrel on the same land. I don't know if it is absolutely needed but I am a bit anal :)

The bullets are 150 grain 30 caliber Accubonds. MV is over 3000 fps.
I am not a good target shooter but they are well under MOA even in my hands.

I will.

I got the bullets today and the sabots that I made are probably a little short but I'll give them a try.

I also need to make a better fitting loading jag for the 338. The one for the 308 will work, but does not fit perfectly. When you shoot long thin plastic tip bullets is helps to have a jag with the same shape as the bullet.

I machine them from brass and for a 45 barrel I make them 0.445 in diameter. To make for a perfect fit I take one of the bullets in a sabot and load it into the 3 inch drop from the barrel and push it down. I then melt some casting alloy that melts at 158 degrees and pour it on top of the bullet and then push the hollowed out bras jag on top and apply enough force to get any air pockets out. I let it cool for a few minutes and push everything out. A little deburring and I have a perfect mirror of the bullet inside the jag. When you load, there is no way to cant the bullet or deform the nose.

That is incredible, gotta say. Now my question is why aren't you selling these things. I would file for patent on it ASAP..... Those are pretty cool.

Would you be able to make 20 30cal to 24 or 25 cal sabots? Just a little curious what a 30-378 would do with 100-120 grn 257 bullets. Or maybe thats just dumb, dunno, could really scream out of the barrel. Would be easier than an extreme wildcat that ruins barrels in 200 rounds. I wish I knew how to run a lathe, that is pretty cool.

These only work in a muzzleloader as they are already rifled for the barrel.

If there were enough folks with fast twist barrels they might be viable but making them in short runs would easily put the price over a dollar a piece.
For the diehards like myself it is a fun hobby, but I don't see many people looking for super long range muzzleloading :)

Those 44 Partition HG sabots aren't really any cheaper than around $0.95/sabot and bullet. And they sell, I do realize it is a specialty item that is tailored for each barrel tho. Not really an over the counter load, more of a special order item.
