338 Lapua range time

Now that looks like fun! Oh and the shooting too..... A sandwich, a can of pop and another box of ammo and a guy would be set for the afternoon. Good luck with the yote...post a pic of whats left.... :) CL

Damn...that's some pretty fine shooting DF! I need to hurry up and find a load I'm happy with and start seeing what mine (or should I say I) can do downrange a bit further....

I have a poor mans 338 Lapua aka 338 RUM. Can I join the club?

FWIW, the 338 300 gr AB should be available by April 1. BC is .720.

Shoot don't worry, You'll get there! Stay with the 300 grain bullet... SMK or Berger Hybrid don't matter.

Thanks DF!

What kind of MV are you getting with the 338 Lapua AI and the 300 gr bullets?
I am thinking my 338 RUM with a 26" barrel will be around 2700 fps with the 300 gr AB. Mark 4 scope will allow me plenty of MOA adjustment to get out to 1K+.

I'm pushing the 300 grain SMK at around 2825-2850 fps with 93 grains of Retumbo. Desert Marksman in Palmdale is around 4100 ft. ASL. I needed 22.5 MOA from my 110 yards zero to get to 1K. The farthest shot I made with my 338 was around 1332 yards. I was shooting a small rock and I have to dial up 35.25 MOA on a 2560 ft. ASL and cosine .95 slope.

Well, no luck on the coyote hunting this morning, but I did manage to get my PST mounted and sighted in! I'm pleased to say that I absolutely love the scope! Seems to track really well and the optics are bright and sharp. I did manage to even chrono a load between showers too. I had some 300 SMK's over 90.3 grains of H1000, CCI250 primer, Lapua brass and it was running an average of 2662fps about 20 feet in front of the muzzle. Accuracy was decent...never did measure anything but it was good enough for screwing around a bit. Anyway, after sighting in I had 2 rounds left. I had a 12"x12" steel gong with me and we ran it out as far as the terrain would allow us from our shooting position which ended up being 569 yards according to my LRF. I dialed in the data into my ballistics program and it gave me 12MOA up. The wind where we were at was blowing much harder than it seemed to be downrange and was gusting from 4-10 mph from 3 o'clock. I entered a full value wind at 4mph and gave it 1 MOA right. Fired the first shot and my buddy called perfect height and it went between the target and the stand to the right (about 2 inches off the edge of the target). So I cut my wind read in half and fired again and was rewarded with a very satisfying SMACK!!! It damn near spun the 3/8" plate all the way around and left a mark about 1/2 the thickness of the steel in it....I think I need to invest in some AR500 steel targets! Impact was about a half inch low from center and on the right 1/3 of the plate...apparently I could have held no wind and probably would have center punched it.

My buddy had never seen anyone shoot longer distances before and he was giggling the whole ride back home....always fun to introduce others to the joys of lead flinging!

And some gun porn just for fun. Savage 110 FCP HS .338 Lapua Mag with Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50

Very awesome buddy! Rifle looks great and like alot of fun! 300gr bullet 2600 is nothing to sneeze at.

According the the Sierra reloading book it should be about 2700fps at the muzzle with this load. Anyone know how much velocity you lose 20' from the muzzle? Had to put the chronograph a bit farther away than I wanted to because my tripod wouldn't go any lower to get it down where I could shoot through it from the prone position....had to use the terrain to lower it. Anyway, it's a couple of grains under max and again according to the book I should be able to get to 2750 with this powder...I'd be happy getting over 2700 with good accuracy.

Friend of mine is using 89gr of RL-25 with the 300gr SMK and getting 2800fps. Thats with a 30" barrel.

Ya, he's got about 4" of barrel more than I do. I'm sure I can get over 2700, but accuracy and brass life are important to me over pure speed.

Too bad you didn't get a crack at a coyote. However, the PST looks pretty cool mounted atop that rifle.
