My good friend Lill just got a .338 Lapua TRG Rifle and is adament about deer hunting with it this year.I've been trying to explian to him that that round is to much for deer and was made as a sniper/target rifle.Could anyone please give their thoughts as to the use of his gun and the round it shoots.

beakmaster,

I shoot a 338 RUM which is very similar to the 338 Lupa and have used it on elk, mule deer, wt deer, and black bear. In every case, the game was on the ground at the shot. The 210 gr PT can be a little too destructive but the 250 gr PT (WT Deer at 40 yds) punched a quarter size exit hole with little meat destruction.
The 338 RUM and 338 Lupa are big hammers and your friend will hammer 'em but good! If he puts the bullet where it needs to go, there won't be any tracking, just a drag to the truck.

Regards,

JD338
