Has anyone got one of those 338 Marlins yet? And if so, how does it shoot? Shoot just factory? Reloads? I'd sure like to have one for walkin in the timber in Idaho when I retire next month. Big gunshow here in Dallas tomorrow.....anyone? What do you think? Scope it, or no?

I never shot one but I would think if you loaded it with a 210 gr PT, you would be set. Top it off with a Leupold VXIII 2.5x8 and you are set.

Thanks JD, thats what I had in mind, except I was thinking of shooting the 225 or 250 levereveoution (sp) made by Hornady and they offer just the bullets, and I have a 2 X7 VXIII I thought would be perfect. Hope to hear from someone that already has one. I think that would be "the woodsy carryin'rifle" for elk an Bears, maybe a magazine full for wolves........you never know? thanks again for the reply, GRT

Sorry JD, after re-reading my post I hit too many III. That is a VXII and not a three. My typo, sorry for that, I should be more carefull. Thanks again for your reply. It seems there are not as many of these Marlins sold as yet. But , as I said earlier, I will be looking for one at tomorrows (now today's) Gunshow. It should be a bang-flop in the timber.

I bought a 35Rem in a 336 and put a VXIII 2.5x8 before the 338 Exp was avail. I live in Idaho and use it for the same reasons. Timber / brush shot distance from in your face to maybe 75yds. If I was to do it again - same scope but in the 338 Exp.

I got all hot and bothered for one when I saw it in the Marlin catalog, but kinda have forgotten it since. I could see fitting one with a reciever sight and having a great foul-weather elk stomper, but putting a scope on a traditional levergun and hunting with it seems kinda goofy to me. Now a BLR, a Win 88 or a Savage 99 is another matter.

BK,

The older I get the more I appreciate a scope, even on my lever guns.

BK,
I was going to do the same thing (reciever sight) but had the 2.5x8 here and put it on. Glad I did, my eyes are closer to 50 than 40....so it helps.
My wife reminds me of that once in a while, usually when I come sore or busted up from playing to hard
