I got the opportunity to shoot again at my friends farm. We shot 800 yds and I was able to try out my new steel gong. It is 15" diameter and 1" thick. It weighs about 40 lds.

Here is a view of the range. The target frame on the left is 600 yds and the one on the right is 800 yds.

We had atricky wind and my rifle is shooting flatter than the drop chart indicates. With a 2740 fps MV and a 200 yd zero, my chart says I needed 18+1 MOA when actually it was 16+1 MOA. After 3 sighters, I was on.

I also shot some jugs at 700 yds but twice, the bullets went out the side so we were not able to recover a bullet. We will try it again.
We went out to see if we could fill some crop damage permits. I was able to shot this doe, the first big game animal with the new 338 cal 300 gr AB at a whopping 86 yds. At the shot, she dropped in her tracks.

We will get back out in the next couple weeks to continue the testing.

Sweet! Maybe the BC is greater than the .720 claimed. Great performance! I will run some numbers tonight and see what kind of BC actually matches up for you. How far off were you at 600 yards from your chart?

Nice, I bet that doe will taste very good. Was wondering how the bullet would do, looks like very good performance to open up nicely on such a small animal and not have any gaping holes.

Jake,

I shot 800 yds and I was off by 2 MOA, 18+1 vs 16+1.

WOW! Very cool Jim! That is great performance right there. I think Nosler blasted a really long ball with that bullet. Can't wait to see what it does this Fall with others hunting elk and maybe some moose. Even the 338 Win Mag has the ability to push them into the 2550+ or better range. That would make for a cool round for anything really BIG, that just needed alot of bullet.

Great shooting, it looks like it was a great day. Congrats on getting the first big game animal with a 300 grain AB! 86 yards! Man, that deer tool a little bit of energy huh? That is very cool as well. Hopefully Brian has some reports on the 90 AB shortly as well.

Well I ran some numbers basic numbers and according to my simple calculator in order to drop only 16.1 you have to take your BC up to .975. That's at 100 ASL, 29.92 BP 95 F 78% RH with a TOF of 1.01 seconds. That's just impressive!

I have a couple of the 300 grain AB's Jim sent me and man, they look like sewing needles they are so long. It's funny, the 338WM will run the 300 AB to just about the same speed a 30-06 will run a 200.. Kind of puts it into perspective..

Superb job, Jim. That looks like a lot of fun. Good job on the doe.

Wow is right! Looks like the the 300 AB did great for 86 yards. You need to scare the deer back to the 300-600 yard line next time  It's cool to see the 300 AB in action after standing in the plant this past fall looking at the new press that was going to make them.

man thats hard on backstraps

take your chart and tweak the BC up until your trajectory matches the chart, and try that BC at the range.

VERY nice performance there... you're causing an urge to come upon me... irresistible... must... build... fast... 338...

Yeah, Eric, those urges seem to come quite suddenly, even precipitously, around here; and they are rather constant.

What load are you using with the 300 Accubonds? How far off the rifling in your rifle?

Charlie,

My load consist of the 300 gr AB, 91.5 grs Retumbo, R-P case sparked with a Federal GM215M primer.
I load to the maxazine length, COL 3.620" and there is quite a bit of free bore.

Your not going to want to tweek your BC that is the only constant your dealing with. I think the problem is lying somewhere else in the input. The fact you have to run a .9+ G1 BC is supporting my opinion.
