I started to load up some 338win mag and 300win mag loads with my best loads which used IMR4350. Opened my new 8lb can(has been stored for several years) and it was bad. All the other powders(Win760&748/IMR4064/4831/4895 etc/RL19/22/15/unique etc) that was stored with it are fine. Almost makes you cry using it for rose food. Called all around and cannot get any.
SO I went to my 2nd choice powder for the 338win mag for 200grBT and 210grPAR bullets. I loaded up 50 210gr PAR with RL19(77grs) for an upcoming elk trip if I cannot get any IMR4350 before.
I have a possible hog hunt coming up and thought about using some 200gr BT bullets for it in the 338win mag. I was told that the 338 BT(200gr) was constructed heavy and would work well for this or elk. Any truth to this??? Will the 200gr BT hold up for hogs and elk at 3005FPS or just stick with my 210gr PAR bullets??? One reason I ask is I have had 100gr BT in 257(25-06 hot loads), 140gr 7mm rem mag and 150gr BTin 30-06 deflect off the back of animals going away uphill. These would be muley deer and pronghorns. The bullets just made a shallow gouge in the backs of the animals. This also happened to a friend. We were aiming to drive a bullet thru the back(and spine maybe) and into the heart/lung area. I have done this with PAR bullets. I was not happy and will probably only use PAR or other brand bullets in the future. Has anyone else had this happen to them?
I had planned to hunt hogs with my 300win mag and 150gr PAR bullets but would have to give up 100-200+fps if I went to my 2nd or 3rd choice powder. So I thought I might use the 338. I plan to take the 50bmg with 647gr Barnes X-bullets to try if I get the chance. Nosler needs to make a good hunting bullet for the 50bmg. I can use lead bullets for the pig hunt where I am going.
