338win mag pre 64

Wow, what a great looking rifle! You and Scotty are going to be like the Wonder Twins when they activate. All jokes aside, beautiful rifle and congratulations. Your uncle would be proud, that rifle is going to serve you well, and it's good to get you back in the reloading game.

Joe

Mickys are nice. My Pre-64 sits in one and they feel great Supergrade mag fill is what mine is. But mine was a full blood donor when I got it.

Pat,

Nice rifle. The 210 gr PT is an awesome bullet for anything you will hunt with the 338WM, shirt big bears.
Then I would load up the 250 gr PT.

JD I already have aquired the dies and two OLD boxes of 250 PT's. I do plan on getting some 210's as well.

I think we need a 338 ABLR???

You aren't kidding, I would love a 225ABLR, made for us "little" 338 Win Mag shooters.. Ah well, I guess I can suffer along with the 225 AB's till that point though...

Have you ran the QL numbers on a 225 ABLR with just a SWAG?

I have ran the 225AB quite alot.. Looks real good out of the Alaskan. I've resisted using the 225's, for no good reason. This year, I am going to try and make it right though.

I figure I can work an easy 2850/2875 out of them with some load work. The Hornady 225 SST's run a cool 2875 out of my rifle Pat, I would like to try and match the accuracy and speed of that load with the 225AB's.

HA! Yeah, they are AJ. Nothing more or less than a dozen other cartridges, but it is a good one in my book. Not so big to require muzzle brakes or heavy rifles to dampen recoil, but enough energy to hunt anything here on our continent and probably any animals, anywhere else with good shots (and a back up)!

I have owned 2 of them and both were pretty easy to load for. The 338 has to be one of the most popular over 30 calibers, probably right along with the 375. It makes a heckuva good larger than deer cartridge, if you were ever so inclined.

Got to go with Jim on this one. My .338 pushes a 210 Partition along a trajectory nearly identical to my .270 with the 130 Partition. A whole bunch of horsepower riding a very tight string. For more mass, there's the take-no-prisoners 250 Partition or, if you wish, the 300 AB.

AJ, I can't add much to what Scotty has already said; it is a downright useful cartridge. I used to have a thing for the .300 WM, but the .338 has eliminated that urge.

If I ever have an elk hunt planned, or a chance to go on one, a Model 70 Alaskan Laminate Stainless in 338 WM will be procured.

The 225 Partition was my favorite in the .340 Weatherby. IMR 7828 SSC, 88.0 grains would get you about 3080 fps with that bullet and DRT elk!

This, right here, is a concern I have if/when I buy an M70 .338... I fear the urge to rechamber or rebarrel to .340 will be too much for me.

I should be getting my .338 back from the Gunsmith soon and will start working up loads.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this rifle shoots, Model 70 CRF, as it's a left handed rifle. My first left hander and I've decided to look for a left handed Model 70 in 25-06 to compliment it and complete my 2 Gun Battery. Until I find the 25-06 I'll use my right handed Model 70.
I heard a rumor that Winchester will be making a run of left handed Model 70's in a year or two. I hope it's more than just rumor.

I would imagine this is accurate; it is difficult to imagine them ignoring this market for long. As soon as the brand name is reestablished and product is being provided, they will service the other segments of the market.

I would hope they bring back the lefties too, I would be in serious trouble if they came out with a Featherweight 264 WM. Same with an Extreme Weather in the same caliber.

Save up your coinage, Gerry; I foresee this coming on market within a year or so.

I wouldn't sweat it too much Kurt. The 338 will put them out around 2850-2875 without drama. More would be okay but unless your hunting with a heavy rifle or braked, the 340 would be more than I'd like to shoot in the off season too much. Plus, I'm not sure the elk would like either.

Neck shooting an Elk would sure mess up some jerky action and, I like me some elk jerky with some crushed chili in it :) especially with a 338 round up close  my 338-378 has been checked at 3180 fps at around 10 ft with my chrony and hitting an animal within 300 yds will probably cause lots of meat loss dependent on the location I think a spine would be best shot which I am not a fan of but would if that is all I had? I had a spine shot on an Oryx and shoulda been yanking the trigger and did not and ended going home without  on a 85% tag out hunt on White Sands? That will never happen again as it was a once in a lifetime hunt but I can still have more shots at Oryx hunts here in NM! These were some long horned females standing looking at me at 80 yds? Only reason I was not yanking trigger is stupidity as the hunt organizers were preaching low front kill shots and these oryx were in sticker scubs which covered all but the top 1/2 of their body and I had no low shoot! I strongly feel I should have carried my 270 Wby as my friends son dropped 1 with a 243 with a Game Warden in tow on a special hunt? Big old Gila Elk has a 225 gr written all over him if I,can pull unit 16D next year!
