338WM/264WM in 95* F heat!

Fotis, next step is to credit card bed this rifle. If it shoots, I will bed the recoil lug, get rid of the pressure point and make sure it is properly sitting in something other than hot glue!

I also have some 215M's and those will get utilized if the rifle still seems a little out of sorts with grouping. I think I am close to having something good. Then, I am taking it out long and see how it holds up. It is a good rifle so far. Feels great shooting and really shows some speeds I am impressed with! Scotty

Just curious how bad it copper fouls?
It comes from the same era as most of my M70's, and they all shot alot better after 200-300 rounds burned through the tube.... maybe it'll settle in soon?
It seemed the tighter accuracy came when the fouling minimized.

That's a good point Chet. The 270 was about the same till I had about 150 rounds down the tube. It does copper foul pretty good. It is smoothing out though. Maybe as I shoot it it will continue to settle in. It is doing okay though. Really like the rifle a bunch. Scotty

chet,

Your point is well taken. I have (or have had) quite a few Winchester rifles from the final days of the New Haven plant. Most fouled severely until they were well broken in. My 280 required well over 250 rounds before it settled down and became a great rifle. Likewise, my 325 WSM required quite a bit of attention before it began to give me good, reproducible loads.

Thats great news. Hopefully it continues to shoot as good and get better! Scotty

Hang in there, Scotty. You have the right rifle chambered in a great cartridge. It will shoot.

I think we're all just a tad bit jealous of scotty's 264.... okay, maybe ALOT jealous 8)

I KNOW that thing will be sub-moa for sure!!! It's just a matter of time, buddy!

One trick you might want to try out, if you have a bore sighter:
that middle screw in the M70 can give a guy headaches.
Secure the rifle in a vise of sorts, install the bore sighter.
Watch through the scope for POI change as you tighten that middle screw.
If the POI changes, then the bedding of the front and rear screws is insufficient.
That's why pillars work so well, they make the torque of that middle screw not so important.
If you just re-bed the recoil lug, the middle screw can still change things.
And if you decide to bed the rear screw location, make sure you leave some clearance behind the reciever (the part that hangs low and has the threaded hole for the screw). Without clearance, it will act as a recoil lug and may crack the stock.

now go shoot some more!!!!

I happen to know where there's a real nice looking pre-'64 in .264 Win Mag for sale. Just sayin'.....

;)

Thanks Chet. I am going to lift the barrel out of the channel this evening and once I find some more 130gr AB's, I will reshoot. Scotty

I can't find it in the Cabela's Gun Library listings, but it's in the Hamburg, PA Gun Library. I think it's about $1200-$1300, something like that. I told you about it a while ago, actually.

That 264WM SuperGrade that was for sale local to me didn't last long, though. That one was gone pretty quick, lol.

Those Super Grade 264's would surely be an awesome rifle.

I did the fake float on the barrel last night and need to get some more bullets. Probably wOnt get to shoot it again till after the 4th but I will have things prepped. Scotty
