35 Whelen 62k psi QL Data

I know this is beating a dead horse sort of….

Is there anyway possible to run 35 Whelen QL loads at 62k psi, please?
225 gr AB, and 250 gr NP please.
24 inch barrel, 1-14 twist.

Is there anyway possible to add CFE223, and StaBall 6.5, along with some of the newer powders too?
 
That would certainly make a full case.

The Ackley doesn't show pressure till it's too late but as long as you keep it at 64k or less it purrs like a kitten.
Not picking an argument just trying to save you the trouble and maybe damaging your rifle. I have had numerous case heads separate in the Whelen but none with the Ackley.

Any time, yeah, the guy you know may be getting those levels of pressure according to whatever loading manual he is using, but in real life you need to have a ballistics lab test the loads in a pressure barrel.
I had a friend who was very capable tweaking quick load to my brass which I sent him once fired samples of brass fired in my rifle chamber plus real time chrony readings of the load's velocity. Don't take here say as evidence since the proof is in the actual testing.
 
Guys, don't take offense to this, but if you can load a 270 Win or 22-250 to 64-65K PSI then a Whelen won't know the difference either. Pressure is pressure.

Now, saying that I don't think we gain a ton getting that last 3-5K PSI out of a load unless that is where it shoots. I shot the same cases for YEARS and years shooting a 250 Speer or Partition at 2640FPS with RL15 from a 24" rifle and I never lost a primer pocket or had a bad case problem. I am sure you can see from the data I was probably into the 62-64K range.

I just don't think SB6.5 is a great powder for the Whelen unless you're getting into heavier bullets. Now, CFE223 or LVR seems to work really well, as will RL17, but you gotta be slow dropping that amount of powder in an 06 sized case.

Are chamber throats average length in the 35 Whelen, or do they tend to run a little long like in the 9.3x62?
If they are a little long, then the bullets might be seated a little further out, and that is a possibility as to why someone might get a tad more velocity.
Scotty, you are absolutely correct in comparing the 270 & 22-250 pressures. I think it comes down to case capacity, and how much of a compressed load one would make.

Are chamber throats average length in the 35 Whelen, or do they tend to run a little long like in the 9.3x62?
If they are a little long, then the bullets might be seated a little further out, and that is a possibility as to why someone might get a tad more velocity.

The Whelen chambers I have seen have been all over the map. My older CDL 35 Whelen had a very long throat, a similar 7600 has a shorter throat than the 700 had. My current Ruger is also fairly short compared to the 700 CDL.
 
Guys, don't take offense to this, but if you can load a 270 Win or 22-250 to 64-65K PSI then a Whelen won't know the difference either. Pressure is pressure.

Now, saying that I don't think we gain a ton getting that last 3-5K PSI out of a load unless that is where it shoots. I shot the same cases for YEARS and years shooting a 250 Speer or Partition at 2640FPS with RL15 from a 24" rifle and I never lost a primer pocket or had a bad case problem. I am sure you can see from the data I was probably into the 62-64K range.

I just don't think SB6.5 is a great powder for the Whelen unless you're getting into heavier bullets. Now, CFE223 or LVR seems to work really well, as will RL17, but you gotta be slow dropping that amount of powder in an 06 sized case.
My 700 classic 35 Whelen also has a long throat. I'm able to load bullets way out there. I've never had any case head separation or loose primer pockets either.

Hey, Scotty, I've noticed that long throat in your old Whelen. Still groups good. Was reading in Ken Waters Pet Loads book of him using a Rem 700 Classic that had a long throat. Maybe it was a Remington thing as both him, you and Jim have encountered the same thing with same company. Dan.

Most Remington 700's have long throats (free bore) to get the speeds up.

Just like the 9.3x62 I don’t think the throat hurts much if any as long as it’s kept to tolerance in regards to the bullet diameter. Wby seems to do fine but their freebore is just a whisker over bullet diameter. I think it gets wonkey when it’s long and sloppy.

I think that is the issue with my Marlin X7. For a 30-06 it has a long throat. With the Hornady modify case measuring to the lands the 230gr Berger is the only one that doesn’t fall out. It is in the case just by the boattail. That is the reason I think it likes the 210gr Bergers and nothing else.
