35 Whelen deer loads

I have read through the 35 bullet section and want to know what is your favorite load just for whitetail deer? I'm thinking Speer 180, 220, Nosler 200gr AB, Hornady 200gr. I read that RL15 is popular, some IMR8208XBR and IMR4320. I have Varget, IMR4064 and CFE223 what about these? List all that you use or have used. Thanks, Dan.

I have used IMR 8208, Varget, RL 15, H 4895 and a bunch of others over the years including H 322 and AA 2015. Some of the new powders these days are quite intriguing like the stuff from Alliant and of course CFE 223. The Speer 180 and 220's have a reasonably heavy jacket and a cannelure, combined with their Hot Cor process they are pretty tough bullets so can handle the speed you can get from a Whelen. Said it a bunch of times but the 200 gr AccuBond and 200 gr TTSX are great for deer and can handle much bigger game. Any of the powders I mentioned will be good but I would start with IMR 8208 and CFE 223 first. The powders you have already all are excellent so you are in good shape there. With Varget it helps to tap the case and pour in the powder slowly to have a bit less compression, used a lot of that over the years with excellent success.

Go with the 180 speer or 200 hornady. More velocity and better expansion for Whitetails. You don,t need a bonded bullet for this work.

Over the years I have used AA2015, IMR4064 and RL15 with 200, 225 and 250 gr bullets. All have delivered sub MOA accuracy in my 700 Classic 35 Whelen. I took the Whelen out of retirement this year and used the 250 gr PT with 59.5 grs RL15 for a 2585 fps MV to take a nice buck. He was DRT.

The go-to load for my Remington 7600 35 Whelen is the Sierra 225 GK with RL-15. It is extremely accurate.

Same here except I use H4895 in my 7600. The 225 Sierra is the cats meow on deer. Wide expansion and it hangs together really well.

RL15 is excellent as well, as is Varget. Really any of them are really danged good in the Whelen. I am with Gerry as well, the 200 AB or TTSX would be dynamite as well, but the old Sierra's are real good for bucks in my opinion.

Jim, is 2685 right? If so, it's no wonder it bowls bucks over, it's a 338 Win Mag! :mrgreen:

I would expect that velocity with a 200 gr. Usually the 250 gr max out at 2500-2550 fps in the Whelen.

I run the 225 gr. Barnes TSX over RL15 in my Custom Mauser .35 Whelen. Velocity is 2710 FPS and accuracy is superb. The load is 60.4 gr. Remington brass and Winchester WLR primer. I very strongly recommend starting one and a half to two grains less as while the load is fine in my Mauser, it's too hot for my Ruger M77RS and Remington M700 Classic. That load has given me excellent results on elk.

I don't have a 35 Whelen but I did have a 350 Rem Mag. My favorite bullet was the 225gr Sierra Game King. They were very accurate and killed Deer with authority.
