35 Whelen Elk Loads

Silly question for the Whelen crew. Have you guys ever tried H414 behind the 225's?

I started and stopped at RL15. I do have some 8208 and W760 that I could try!

The way I heard it, was that if an elk even heard the name "Whelen" he'd quiver a mite, then fall dead, right there....

That's true isn't it?

Of course it's true. I've seen it.

Have any of you used the 250 sp-rp interlock on elk or bear? I suspect it would do the job well and hope to see how it works on a bear in a couple weeks.

I think this bullet was changed up some awhile back by Hornady. Someone here tested one of them. It wasn't the "tougher" bullet of the old Interlock fame. Still, it is a 250 grain bullet coming out of the Whelen, so even if it doesn't hold up perfectly, I am sure its going to go quite away before coming apart.

I've used a 250 grain InterLock on bison. It was shot from a .358 Winchester; it worked.

The 250gr interlocks, Hot cores, and grandslams are all know performer in the whelen. Thats what they were designed for the whelen. And at 200 yards or less they will be great for trajectory too.

If thats all you can find I would use anyone of them. There tuff yet expand on deer as well as moose and did I say they are tuff.

you will need a drop tube to settle the powder a bit better.

Hi Gerry or others. I never used a drop tube, so what is involved with this process?

On a side note, there is a box of 50 pretty 225G partitions sitting on the bench

Thanks

This is all the drop tube I use. It is 4" and works so well, I use it for everything and think nothing about it. All I do is dump a little slower and it seems to settle in right nice. No shaking the case, or anything, pour and seat the bullet.

Congrats on the 225 PT's. Loaded up with any decent Whelen powder, you'll be in great shape.

Scotty covered it pretty good on using a drop tube, I actually just tapped the case on the bench as I poured it in but a drop tube is much easier. Actually I loaded the longer 225 gr AccuBond, the shorter Partition might not compress the powder too much at all. Your uncle will be pleased with how the 225 gr Partition performs on elk and deer, it is one of the best 35 cal bullets available.

I am with Gerry, I run it in my 358 at 2450 and it is excellent. Opens quickly and penetrates FAR!

I have a few of those to try in my new Whelen but no time to get to the range, need to load some up and get out there soon :)
