35 Whelen using RL17 Powder

I searched the forum before submitting this. Has anyone played around with the Whelen using this powder with 225 Accubonds?

My current load is with RL15, quite happy with it too. But since I am trying RL17 in the 30-06 right now my thoughts were on this powder with the Whelen.

DON,

Pretty tough to beat RL 15 with the 225 gr AB in the 35 Whelen.

I thought I had posted an inquiry on this same combination some time back, Don. If/when I did, it was before I got a copy of QuickLoad for myself.

When I run the .35 Whelen in QuickLoad using Re17, the velocity potential appears to be nearly identical to Re15's velocity potential. I have yet to actually try the combination, but I will one of these days. In my mind, since there's really nothing to be gained velocity-wise, it's all a question of accuracy. Who knows...maybe Re17 will knock Re15 off the top of the heap as THE powder for the Whelen.

Yeah ya never know. I do have some Varget to try in the Whelen. That's my next step with the 225 AB.

I can't imagine many powders beating RL15 in the Whelen. I heard good things about RL12, but never saw or used it. The speed and accuracy I see are awesome and again, I can shoot the same load in the 90 degree Summer months without issues. I do like to experiment, but I bet you will have a hard time beating the speed of RL15. If it wasn't accurate, Varget would be my 2nd choice, just cause it is accurate in everything else. Scotty

Scotty,

All you guys are correct. My experience with RL15 has been as you guys stated too.
My current load with the 225 AB is 2677 fps with grouping in the 3/4"-range out of a 22" barrel.
It's a bang flop load. But it's always fun to mess around with different loads. You never know I could get a Whelen load that shoots one hole groups!

I'm going to experiment with R17 & Varget soon as I get a chance. Gotta complete my loads with the 30-06 & 300 RUM before I launch into the Whelen.

I believe it has been stated on another thread, and it certainly is borne out in my own work, I get a one-hole group with the first shot every time.

I love that concept, credit JD for that one. :)
