35 Whelen ?

Magnum mania put it on the back burner but from what I have read it will do anything the magnum mid bores will do with less recoil and less burnt powder now that we have modern bullets and powders for it.

Man you guys and the Whelen..................................

Seriously. It's like some sort of cult worship. I mean, I could understand it if they were all fawning over the 270Wby (the greatest cartridge ever designed) but this borders on lunacy. The Whelen isn't even as versatile or useful as the 30-06...

Just speaking the truth in love, Doc.

I love to shoot all rifles. Some I have seem to get no love from others (9.3X64, .284 Winchester, .280 Remington, etc.). However, I'm always pleased to see discriminating shooters and hunters who know a good thing when they see it.

Ah my friend dubyam you've been caught up in Magnum mania. Come on home to the beltless family. We will let you in the door, you don't even have to knock.

Oh, I go beltless frequently, Rodger! In fact, the belted cartridge represents only a quarter or less of my battery at this time. Much like Doc, I have an appreciation for a variety of cartridges. I even like the 35-06. Just not as much as some others.

I am not going after it, if it were a pump, I would be out selling some things in the garage to make money.

Many many years ago when Remington first brought out the Whelen I bought a 7600 pump when I should have walked out the door with a bolt gun.... long story short, it didn't shoot that well, and wont handle the hot loads like a bolt action can. I won't go that route.

I do believe there may be a "few" others in the line up

Guy,

I am getting 2575 fps with the 250 gr PT from a 22" barrel with 59.0 grs RL 15 which is pretty decent from a '06 case. I could push it a bit faster but at the expense of less case life. The 35 Whelen was introduced in 1922 and really became popular in the 1930's great depression era. Many 35 Whelen's were made in lieu of the 375 H&H for economic reasons.

WM,

The 35 Whelen is a legitimate 400 yd elk rifle with the right load and scope.
Having said that, I love my 338 RUM for long range work. :)

Mike,

I also have to smile when I realize that my grandfather was using a caliber with a tad bit more ballistically speaking, but similar to the 35 Whelen, 17 years before the Colonel got around to developing the 35.

While the caliber my grandfather, father, and now myself, was and is using in Europe and Africa, stayed popular from the outset in 1905 and is still a very popular round, the 35 Whelen was listed as a wildcat until 1988. Bullets are readily available for the 9.3 x 62 Mauser in Africa and Europe, but even today it is not easy to find any 35 Whelen cartridges in the interior of Africa. Maybe it is like a man eyeing the new woman who just moved in up the block from where he lives. She cant do anything his wife cant do, maybe not even as much, but she is "new" lol

Solomon was right; there's nothing new under the sun. However, some of these cartridges are just fun to play with. Aleena, I do like the 9.3X62, though I'm currently playing with my 9.3X64 and having a great deal of fun. I may yet get a 9.3X66 Sako, just to say I've played with it. I have a great deal of overlap in my arsenal, and reckon I always will. Again, it is because each cartridge is a law unto itself and a great deal of fun sorting through the intricacies of each one. Oh, yeah, your analogy is likely correct, but I don't want to let my wife read over my shoulder.

Dr. Mike, your right, many good calibers to choose from
275, 300, 375 H & H
9.3 x 62, 64, 74R
257, 300, 340 Weatherby

Not to mention the 40 odd calibers derived from the 30-06, of which the 35 Whelen is one of.

So many men, so little time, oops, I meant calibers.

Actually my first post was directed at a young marine who frequents this forum, but if I am forced to get serious, then I admit the 35 Whelen is not a bad choice in calibers---if---you can find a 9.3 x 62

I will show myself to the door guys, be well all and I hope everyone has a good fall hunting season

A,

You are a hoot. :)
Thanks for the drive by. Hope you are doing well and can take a break and go hunting.

Ah, yes, the young Marines are a source of trouble in many a forum. The older ones have learned to behave themselves. Glad you were able to drop be.
