350 gr Speer hot core

The Hot-Cor has always been a good bullet that performs well under the conditions for which it is intended.

The 350 gr Speer has a really good reputation and with your 1885 you can load them out nicely. Great bullet..........

I thought those bullets were considered too hard for 45-70 loads. I thought they were designed for the 458 Win Mag, etc.

Looks great. What is the retained weight and widest point of expansion?

JD338

From experience, I can tell you that it will almost turn a younger black bear inside out, when fired out of a 458 Win Mag at close range! ( used by a friend on his farm on a younger bear that was terrorizing his livestock and could not otherwise be persuaded to leave)

The first pic show top view to see how much it expanded
The second pic is the same bullet on a quarter this bullet was min load at 2250 fps since then I up the load two grains This summer I will take it to max I should get 2450 to 2500 just to see if I can these loads are right out of the Speer 13th addition.
The third pic is buck I shot 3 years ago at 115 yards freehand.
I also found i box of Nosler 300 grain Partions but I pay almost $100 for them.

WOW! Great results. A few guys are using that bullet out of ML's as well and report it is very good. Doesn't seem to have any trouble with that speed at all. I am sure it puts a nice hole in stuff as well.

Great test. Thank you for posting them up!

Oh, cool rifle and deer.. That is great stuff..

Yup that one is a tough bullet. That is why it should not be used at sedate 45-70 velocities...like from a Marlin

What's a minimum expansion velocity for these? I'm thinking I should stick to the 300s in 45/70.

My opinion, but with a relatively flat point they really don't need to expand much, if any. A 45 caliber hole will leak pretty doggone well.

I've used them around 1900fps MV out of a Marlin and they were / are great on pigs. Plenty of expansion and almost always pass throughs.
