Curiosity has me wanting to explore something "different". Anyone have experience with this cartridge?

No experience with it! But oh man, that is one of my picks for a big 358! Something like the STA or Norma would have a sure place in my safe. 250's at 2800-2900! Yeah, that would do everything I would want done..

I used H4831 and H4350 in mine with 225's and 250's but that was 15 years ago when I worked up loads.

I would think you could get the 250 gr PT near the 3k mark making it a true long range hammer.

JD338

Man, I would die to have a 358 magnum of some sort. Since Mike started his 9.3 Brenneke, I have been dieing to see the stats he gets. I'm really thinking a 375 Ruger necked down to 358 would be a nice mix between the Norma and STA. 2850-2900 with a 250 PT would really answer some mail!

Mine has a 25" barrel and shoots 250's over 3000fps.

I've built 3 others for friends and 2 others for me besides the one I still have. Looking through the load data I have it looks like they average right around 3150 with 225's and right at 3000 with 250's. the one I still have shoots 250's about 3050fps but the body on mine is about .040" longer than standard.

I think a great cartridge also ! but why not just get a 375 H&H and be done with it ? 260 gr Partition or Accubonds at 2800-2900 - whats not to like ? JMHO Jim

Rem Jim, I like your way of thinkin. I already have a nice 375 in my Remington Ultra Mag. Was looking for something in the 35 cal family. Also, Montana Rifleman makes barrelled actions in 358 STA in twist rates of 12 and 16, which would be better?

I would definitely do a 12 twist to stabilize the heavier bullets.

Well - i did not know you already had a 375 RUM - thats a bit more then the 375 H&H ! It will really beat the hell out of a 358 STA - if you want something a bit smaller but may the best all round cal-cartridge under 40 cal i would look at a 338 RUM ! That cal -cartridge with its high bc and sd bullets is a monster and very flat shootin - and not as much recoil as a big 358 or 375 - what do you think ? JMHO Jim

Rem Jim, good points on the 338 RUM. But have one of them too. My main concern was filling that "void" in the gun safe where no 35 cal sits, in between the 338 and the 375. Was looking for something not of the norm. I just can't seem to follow the crowd too often.

A 338 RUM will kick harder than a 358STA with equal bullet weights. It's a larger case and burns more powder.

Do you have any pictures of your 358 STA? Would like to see what that beast looks like. Scotty

I'll try to get some but it's in my other safe at my dad's house. I only have room for one in my gun room. I'm usually over there once a week though.

I'm having this same debate with my self as of late. I don't want a RUM, I have a 375R (that I love), and I have a Stainless classic M70 in a 338 WM that I have a love hate relationship with. I was thinking about making a .358/375R. Then I got to looking at the numbers between that and my 375R, and they are not very different. Now I can't make up my mind. I really like the .338 bullets, so why not just go back to a 338 WM, or a 338/375R. I have never owned a .358" anything, and have had a man crush on the 358 STA for 10+ years now.

I haven't got it all worked out yet, but I'm working on a spread sheet. Hoping that will help.

I think we are in the same boat Jake.. Why don't you go ahead and build the 358/375R and let me know how you like it!

Ok Scotty and Jake,
I'm reading these posts and wondering what should I do? I've got a M70 300WM classic donor sitting under my bench next to a Winchester Supergrade stock and a Win double lug express stock. I was thinking 375 Ruger since I own nothing larger than a 338WM but maybe a 358 Norma would be the ticket.... What do you think?
Scott

Scott,

You would be pleased with either cartridge. I like them both. Either will be a powerhouse, capable of handling any big toothy, clawed creatures that inhabits North America.
