I have the chance to buy a M700 that someone has shortened the barrel to 20". Any idea on how much velocity I would loose compared to a 24"?

QL projects a loss of ~120 fps. For long distances, that could be a problem. For anything under 300 yards, it wouldn't be a serious detriment. The rule of thumb for calculating velocity differential is 25-35 fps per inch.

I would think the 375 wouldn't be hurt with a 20" tube much at all. Like Mike says, maybe a 100FPS or maybe a touch more, but it uses relatively fast powders, so I can't see you losing out.

Sounds like a handy thumper though!

I must have been think about the yardage on the ground hog I shot just before I posted the 60fps. I know there is around 30fps per inch loss just posted what I was thinking at the time and I was thinking about the yardage on the ground hog ( 60yds ). I have to hold under at that close with the 257 Roberts its 4 inches high at 50yds.
I'm shooting off the deck on the back of my house and have a large field and hill behind it.

I believe quite a few guides and others have shortened their .375's down to the 20 - 22" lengths, making the rifles handier in thick brush. Thinking brown bear in the alders here...

Suspect that you could still easily see 2400 fps with 300 gr bullets, and a couple of hundred fps over that with 260's or 270's.

Speculation on my part. My Ruger has a 24" barrel and I generally get 2500 - 2550 with 300's and 2600 - 2700 fps with 260's & 270's.

We cut one down from 26 to 16"and checked velocity loss. I can't remember exact numbers off the top of my head but it was negligitable until you went below 19" then showed a increasing decline. I know I went 20" and never looked back. Some factory loads showed almost no loss and definitely less than 125fps when compared to 24". The fairly fast powders used in 375 work great out of 20". The same cannot be said for cartridges like 300 rum.

Once the weather gets better, I want to run some loads over the chrono. Heck, even 100fps is not that bad considering the handiness.

Talk about a big stick in a small bundle

That is a nice looking gun, I wouldn't shy away from a 20" barrel on a 375.

Makes a NICE handling rifle that 20 " er and it will still be a 300 yard cartridge with plenty of Jam ! JMO RJ

Yeah, that is a sweet looking rifle. Looks plenty handy and I can't see a 20" barrel hurting that cartridge much if any.

Very handsome rifle. I wouldn't be concerned about a twenty-inch barrel in that chambering.

Oh yeah, I'd hunt with that!

What a great looking Lil' Thumper that thing could turn out to be...

Rifles with shorter barrels, like that one, can be real quick and handy. I've got a .30-06 that I had a smith cut the barrel from 26" to 21" - that changed the entire dynamics of how the rifle felt in hand. Much better. My son and I haven't had any problem ringing the gong with it at 300 yards either and he keeps filling tags using it.

Our .308 Win Browning BLR has only a 20" barrel. Works great!

The .30-30 Marlin-Glenfield has a 20" barrel. Plenty long enough.

Had a .45/70 Marlin "Guide Gun" with the 18.5" ported barrel. YOWZA! Noisy little rascal, but I loved the way it handled.

My 5.56mm AR-15 has only a 16" barrel. Noisy but it handles GREAT.

Just some examples of shorter barreled rifles I've got, that all work just fine. Now I wouldn't want a stubby barrel on something like a .264 Win mag or a .257 Wby mag, or even a .300 Win mag. I think those high-velocity "overbore" cartridges are at their best with a longer barrel.

FWIW, Guy

Someone once said, "if it can't be killed with a .375 at 2300 fps, it don't need to be killed"

Agree. I know there's better "stopping rifles" but I think the .375 will do just fine for anything I feel a need to hunt.

Ok, you guys twisted my arm and I ended up buying it.
Good thing I have all that H&H brass, die set and bullets...lol

Now, you need to post a few pictures, including a few pictures of targets after some range time. You've got a bunch of us all torqued up.
