375 Ruger

I have a 375 African and love it. I shoot 74 grains of IMR 4895 behind a 260 grain AccuBond, and can get three right at an inch @ 100. Have tried H380 and RL 19 but got better groups and more fps with the 4895. Shot a bull and a buck this last year with it and LOVE IT!!

Seems, the 375 Ruger tends to like the Mid Burning powders like Reloader 15 and 4895.

Looking foward to moose hunt with it next year.

jmad 81,

Can you describe the details of the shots on the animals, please and thank you?

I have a .375 Ruger African as well and am wondering how the AB is doing?

thanks...jim

Alaska........................Since I am already a big compact rifle fan in owning a 300 WSM Ruger Frontier, I have decided that my next rifle will be the 375 Ruger Alaskan with its 20" barrel, that I will need for Africa in either `09 or `10!...........It is a real rough it, go anywhere, under any weather conditions type of rifle and will equal the ballistics of the 375 H&H with its longer barrel as well.........My scope of choice for the Alaskan will be the Trijicon Accupoint 1.5-4x24 with the amber arrow! With that combo, I will have no doubt, the fastest to target acquisition 375, which is perfect for the dangerous stuff!..............Don`t know if you will get to many responses on the reloading for the Ruger 375. It will take sometime for its popularity to grow, which it definetly will............Until then, the Hodgdon web site has excellent reloading info on the 375 Ruger. I would start there. The other poster had the African model, which except for the 3" difference in barrel length and stock, is the same rifle. Start with his info too!...............Have fun with your Alaskan!!

Hunter Jim-
The buck was a broad side shot at 147 yards. I hit the top of both lugs and dropped him were he stood. The bull was a two year old bull and was quartering away with about a 15 degree downward angle at 247 yards. The frist shot hit him high and back (were i was aiming) went up through the the off side lung and shoulder and stopped under the hide. The bull wobbled pretty good and stumbled broad side and stood there looking like he'd been hit by a truck. after a half a minute or so of him still standing there i put another one through both front shoulders and dropped him. I found both slugs, the first shot was 173.6 grains and the second was like 160 something, anyway they averaged about 70% retention...like they are suposed to. Blood shot on both animals was very minimal. I'm very happy with the combnation for anything I hunt in the U.S. don't think I would take it to africa for a big five hunt though!

I settled on 72.0 of RL 15 and the 270 Hornady SP and WLRM primers. in the Alaska.

For Ruger Alaskan owners Houge is offering free replacement stocks due to the cracking near the pistol grip. Contact me and I will send you the letter and phone number.

jmad 81,

Thanks for the shot description. I agree that the Partition is indicated for larger critters.

Also you can use .375 H&H load data as good comparibles for .375 Ruger loads; a good powder for the H&H will be good in the Ruger too.

my buddy loads 260 grain Accubonds in his Alaskan, over 84.0 grs H4350, does 2750 fps out of his 20" tube
